Veillette Avante Gryphon inbound...
Just ordered one of these. I've been thinking about them for a while now. I've been playing strictly 12-strings in my acoustic trio lately, because they fill up the sound so well. But I'm the "lead player" in the trio, so I had been thinking about getting another mandolin for a while. But being a guitar player, I just don't care for the tiny necks and different tuning of mandolins (I've had four of them and know my way around them). So I finally couldn't stand it any longer and decided to pull the trigger on one of these Veillette instruments. I would eventually like to work my way up to their higher-end stuff, such as a double-neck (six string + Gryphon, or 12-string guitar + Gryphon). But I think the Avante will be a good starting point for me. It should be perfect for tunes that I need to play in the higher registers. Anyone else own/owned one of these?

Don't own one yet, but it's been on my list since I tried one back when they first came out; nicely bridges the gap between mandolin and capoed 12-string guitar, while producing a distinctive voice of its own - IMO it'll serve you well as both a lead and rhythm instrument...

Excellent. Thanks Steve! I've never laid hands on one, but I sure like what I've been hearing and seeing on YouTube.

I too eagerly await your report. I too have often GAS'ed for one. I'm one of those odd 12-string players who sometimes plays or capos way up the neck. You can get not only mandolin-like sounds but fake harpsicord and clavichord sounds up there.

I just bought a 2004 Avalon L32c today on Reverb.com. So I'll have two new toys to be inspired by within in the next week!
