New to Forum Jewitt Guitars
Hello all. I just joined as a sponsor last moth and thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Jeff Jewitt of Jewitt Guitars (and also the color guy behind TransTints and ColorTone). I recently started a custom build that's very unique for musician Matt Thomas (themattthomas.com)
To alleviate back and shoulder issues we co-designed a modified "Manzer Wedge" OM-C where the wedge or its angle goes from the bass upper bout to the treble lower bout. I built a prototype non-cutaway to see if he approved - which he did. Here's a pic of the back end. I'll add pics as the build of the actual guitar in Cocobolo and German Spruce progresses, but here's the woods for the back and sides and top.

Welcome Jeff! I just rewatched your video on Ian’s Ding Kings channel. Thanks for sharing all of that information! Nice to have you here.
Rick PS - yup, that colortone stuff seems to mix with everything. But you knew that. Good job!

Hey Jeff welcome to the forum. Although I don't post very often, I have been a sponsor here for many years. I don't know if you remember me but we have done business through Homestead. You have been a huge help and a great resource throughout the years.
Interestingly I landed on the homestead site yesterday as I was doing a little research on Gustav Stickley finishes. Not that I need any more projects, but I do plan to make some furniture in the Stickley tradition. Anyway checking out some of the guarded "secrets" of the Stickley finish landed me on Homestead. Cool and thanks for that resource. Now back to guitars ... I do welcome you to the forum and I look forward to seeing more of your work. I have been following you for quite a while and it will great to see what else you come up with. I like using Linda's (Manzer) wedge and your take on it awesome. I talked with Linda about using the wedge on my guitar and she was very generous with tips and ideas. She was gracious that I tipped the hat to her calling it the "Manzer Wedge." She jokingly suggested I give her a bottle of wine when I use them. (I still owe her a couple of bottles!) Cheers. |

Update to thread
After bending the sides on the side bender, I bent the cutaway by hand. The sides were all bent at full width of 4.5". After that and fitting to the mold, I used a template to trace the outlines of the sides using templates drawn from the finished prototype. Then I cut them to rough shape using a bandsaw. Then I glued the tail block in using Titebond. Next the reinforcement mahogany support was glued in, but using Epoxy. Note that the treble side (cutaway side) is higher than the bass side due to the wedge shape

Update to thread
Next I glued on the heel block assembly - again using epoxy. Note the tongue on the top for the wedge tenon that will allow the fret board extension to be bolted to the body instead of glued. Once dry, the rim set is pre-profiled. Note the angle at which the dish is resting on the back. Once profiled, I can install linings and side supports

Update 9-13
After the back radius is profiled, the back is attached to the sides. After coming out of the go-bar deck we can really see the unique design of the back taking shape. Then the insides are sanded to 150grit and then sprayed with 2-3mlight coats of shellac with flattening liquid in it to reduce the gloss. I've been finishing the insides of all instruments now for around several years.
