Default Fretboard Summit Chicago - Lutherie Showcase Aug 25-27

Hey,

I think I've somehow curated the Midwest's largest lutherie showcase ever and I wanted to make sure you all knew. The Fretboard Summit is next weekend (Aug 25-27, 2022 at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music). There's a lutherie showcase with many legends as well, as well as concerts, workshops, lectures, and some fun stuff you won't find anywhere else. It's basically like walking through the pages of the Fretboard Journal magazine.

Come if you can and please tell your guitar friends in the Midwest about it. Would love to make this an annual thing!

I posted this on the Events page, too, but I know not everyone heads over there. Hope it's ok...and hope to see some of you in Chicago!

Wow! Would love to be there (sadly, have other commitments) - looks like an incredible event.

Jason .. Are any of the exhibited guitars for sale?

No different than Woodstock or Artisan or La Conner: Most of the guitars are for sale, except for a few that already have owners and are there to show off a luthier's work.

If your plans change, please come! Would love to meet you.

And for those of us who can’t attend, Jason, I hope to see a treasure trove of articles, video and audio on the FJ website!

The expanding FJ universe continues to impress us all and you should be very proud!

BTW, did anyone find the golden ticket? It wasn’t in my copy of #50 unfortunately. Must have fallen out.

Have a wonderful event.

Rick

Thanks Rick. The Golden Ticket was in a guy named Martin's magazine, I believe from CA. Once his Calton Case is done, we'll be sure to post pics to our website.

We'll be filming many of the lectures and talks (and the game show!) from the Summit. Of course, seeing those guitars up close and playing them can't be replicated. Hope to see some of you there!

I'll be there! I'm looking forward to it.

If you find yourself bored by the consistently exquisite quality of the guitars--and who wouldn't be?--drop in on my talk about my current guitar project "Fretology: The Guitar Innovation Lab." I'll be addressing my collaboration with my university medical school's (where I have a faculty appointment) diagnostic imaging program and the Worchester Polytechnic Institute. We have been CT-scanning and recording historically significant vintage guitars and will soon include modern guitars (including the Blue Guitar collection). This is an open-access project: we will share all of our findings--recordings (audio and video), and imaging--with the public.

But, yeah, there will be much cooler stuff to attend. Workshop with Molly Tuttle? Check. Hang with the Milk Carton Kids? Check. Talks by TJ Thompson and Mark Stutman? Check? Performance by Julian Lage? Check.

Please do yourself a favor and check out the schedule.

Jt1 - you’d better make absolutely sure that you bring the X-rays for the 1943 Gibson SJ and that you don’t get them mixed up with the 1955 Thomas. I’m not sure that screws in your scapula are as interesting as scalloped bracing (actually, they are pretty interesting). We’ll see if the TSA scanners like all of your hardware.

Have a great trip!

So many fascinating builders whose work I've never even seen.

I would probably visit Jang, Bashkin, Halland and Sam Guidry first, then take it ALL in. Wonderful lineup.

Before I forget, in addition to the luthier-built guitars, there will be a bunch of new guitars/gear to check out from sponsors Collings, Santa Cruz, Martin, Yamaha (they have some incredible new dreadnoughts... made in California that they'll be showing off), Henriksen amps, Calton Cases, and RODE mics.

Ha! I love it. Thank you.

For those who wish to know the backstory, here it is (though the final tally was 18 broken bones and both lungs punctured)
