Default If You Could Read My Mind

Hi all,

This is only my second post on the site, and I'm a relative newbie with nowhere NEAR the talent I'm seeing exhibited by so many of you; but I'd love to get more involved with you all as time passes and I hopefully progress in my learning. The encouragement and support I've had thus far from our members since joining has been wonderful - thank you.

I'm currently just having a bit of fun producing seven songs, of ALL places, IN MY BATHROOM! lol

I posted one yesterday in my first ever post, and this is the third song I've done (don't worry - I won't be sharing them all! lol).

I'm recording acoustically directly into my iPad using its inbuilt mic, so the sound quality is far from brilliant I'm afraid.

I also put together the guitar arrangement myself working around my current skill-set, so that's not too professional either, but it was fun to do and at the same time it gave me a chance to give my mediocre vocals a work out! As always, I look forward to receiving any comment or (constructive...I get enough negative from 'er indoors! lol) criticism. It's the only way I'll learn.

If anyone would be up for it, I'd also love to see/hear the same song done by my fellow members of AGF so I can enjoy the performances and hopefully pick up some tips along the way. Feel free to post YOUR version(s) below if you feel so inclined...

Jeez, Dave, where did you come from? Your vocals are right on, and the guitar is right there, too (though I'd like to hear it louder). Good choice of songs, too!

Haha. Thanks my friend. I asked my daddy where I came from once but he got all embarrassed and told me to ask my mother!! lol
Seriously, thanks for you kind words mate. I enjoy having a bash at various genres of music, and once I have worked out how to actually USE the new sound and video recording kit I bought myself recently as a retirement present, I SHOULD be able to get the balance right between the vocals and the guitar. The way I’m currently recording obviously has it’s limitations, which is a little frustrating. Thanks again for your encouragement and positive support.

I enjoyed that, and am too intimidated by your vocals to post my own version! Great job.

Thanks Jim, that's very kind of you buddy...and PLEASE don't be 'intimidated' by anything *I* do; I just enjoy having a go and don't mind making a fool of myself. I'd LOVE to hear you do it, it's one of my favourite songs.

I have a friend who plays guitar a bit - mostly electric, admittedly - and likes to have a sing-along too. But never does in front of anyone apart from me, and even then reluctantly. He says he's not good enough and doesn't want to invite criticism. I asked him to come do a song or two at one of the very rare 'Open Mics' I've done, but he declined as the thought of 'playing to an audience' terrifies him. I've messed up big time at a couple myself, but if you're enjoying what you do, carry on, and laugh at yourself when it happens, I've found that invariably the audience will laugh along with you and everyone has fun.

I know there are MANY talented musicians out there who just enjoy playing at home alone and don't feel the need to exhibit their talent to others, but I've told my friend that if he ever feels he wants to have a go, he should, just because it pleases HIM and not worry about what others think.

None of us can please everyone. The way I look at it is that there will always be those with far more talent than me (just look at our members here on AGF), and there will always be those who are just starting out on their guitar journey; a place every single one of us here has been in the past.

There will always be those who like the noise we make, and others who don't. Even the multi-millionaire superstars of the music world have their detractors! And apart from that, provided they do it kindly and politely, 'observations' and 'feedback' from others may well steer us into improving what we do, making it even more satisfying for us when we do it.

Anyway, enough waffle from me. If you ever feel you want to mate, I'd be glad to enjoy your version. Thanks again.

Yes he is.
Lucky for me my vocal range is dead on with his. Our duet does several of his songs.

Brilliant to hear that! Is there any video you could post or site I can go to hear what you do? I’d love to see.

Thanks Steve. I love having a go at different songs, and the bathroom is a surprisingly fun place to play, so they’ll be more coming. lol

Dave, That Is Nice! It hits the spot for me for my favorite Gordon Lightfoot cover songs!
