I'm generally happy with most guitars, but it makes ya wonder when I hear guys complain about how X and Y guitars sound bad. Part of this is technique. Heavy technique on something like a Taylor might sound too bright and dainty technique on a DN might sound a little anemic. Most well made guitars should sound good at least somewhere in the room.

I often go custom, so not always an option. My local shops also don't stock high end acoustics because they don't sell. The D-28 and occasional limited edition Taylor are about it. Around here, acoustic guitar is an afterthought and a secondary instrument at best.

When I get a new guitar, I always bring it to my jam group and ask the good players to try it. It always sounds so good in their hands.

Since the beginning of 2019, for the first time ever, I've had multiple opportunities to hear my guitars being played by people of considerable talent.

It has made me fall in love with them all over again.

I have other players play my guitars every chance I get because I really like hearing what they really sound like. You are absolutely right that our spot behind the guitar as a player sounds much different than out in front. I sometimes play with my guitar laying on my lap pointing almost straight up so I can hear the sound coming off the top and out the sound hole.

The Emerald CF guitar design with a sound hole at the top allows you to hear your guitar better than a traditional center sound hole. It really allows you to hear your guitar as you play.
