Default Al Bearsell 3-D

I have been wanting to get a guitar in by Al Beardsell for a few years now. Here's the first one underway.

Back/sides-- Leopard wood
Top -- Lutz spruceNeck -- Honduras Mahogany (not shown), Wenge laminated
Fingerboard, binding, bridge, etc - Macassar ebony
Lower bout - 16"
Endpin body depth - 4.75"
Scale length -- 24.9"
Nut width -- 1.75"
String spacing at saddle-- 2.25"
Cutaway- florentine
Sideport
Bracing - top - X-braced, back - radial
Rim-- laminated ( Beardsell Platform rim)
Tuners - Gotoh 510

Leopard wood? never heard of, but it's nice... what is the scientific name? which family is it from?

Panopsis rubellens.. family Proteaceae as far as I can establish, I will get in touch with Al to comfirm.

I love his work, it's a shame there aren't more high quality clips of his guitars out there.

Very nice.

Al's guitars were one of my 3 favorite guitars at HGF 11. Judging only by the looks, I was expecting a thin sounding "gypsy" tone. I was stunned when I strummed my first E maj chord. It was hughely rich and full.

Plus, I really dig his design sense.

I have a couple of guitars that are bound in leopardwood but I've never seen it used for b/s. Very cool looking wood but have no idea of how it sounds. Can you advise....Thanks, Robert
