Question Zoom H4n vs. Original H4

I'm trying to digest all the info I can process before springing for a portableunit with multi-track/overdub capabilities, and I'm totally ignorant about the latest in personal recording gadgetry.

That said, is there a huge difference in the original H4 and the H4n? In other words, is there any consensus on which is the clear-cut winner in terms of overall performance, ease of use (for a tyro), and value? The price difference isn't a real concern. I don't mind spending a few extra bean$ for a 'better' unit....

Many thanks for your insights....
Mark

I've owned the H4 and then traded up for the H4n.

Lots of cool things about the H4n like the ability to use onboard mics at the same time as plugging in mics, the onboard speaker is incredibly useful (I used to carry around a set of foldable Radio Shack speakers), bigger memory cards, easier interface (imo), optional stamina mode for really long recordings, onboard mics can go 90 or 120 degrees, optional remote control (no more gruffy hands-on the unit starts and stops to recordings). It goes on and on.

H4n all the way.

Sounds like this might be a no-brainer. I was sorta hopin' to hear from someone with hands-on experience with both units, but didn't expect it in the first response - or so quickly.

Thanks 'stack'

No problem, Dis.

The H4 totally opened up a new world of recording for me. I have GarageBand, but the flexibility of being able to record anywhere & anytime is really fantastic. I remember how thrilled I was a few years ago to do a four-track recording way off the beaten path in the Hill Country of Texas. I couldn't even get cell phone reception, but I could lay down a multitrack tune. Wrote, recorded, and mixed on the Zoom in less than a day while in the field!

Once the H4n came out, I sold the H4 to friend (and he's since gone hog wild with it).

I'm so glad Dischord made this thread. I too was wondering the same thing and now that I know the differences, I've decided to send my h2 back and upgrade to the h4n.
Thanks Stackabones for the tutorage'n.

While I didn't try the H4, I did ask trusted friends here and elsewhere about the H4N before I purchased it a few months back. It meets my needs perfectly! I am looking for a case for it and its accessories, but am glad that it includes a hard plastic case for the recorder itself.

It's an amazing little machine!

I like this SKB case. Anyone use it or other suggestions?

Hi Mark…
I own an older and have played with a newer. Not many new features, but newer technology and if I were buying new, I'd get the new one.

What I dislike most about the Zoom H4:

-Tiny display
-Inconvenient record level adjustment procedure requires menu navigation
-Ephemeral feel of the controls.

It is my understanding that all of the above have been addressed in the design of the H4n.

Thanks guys. This is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.

I believe the jury has reached a verdict....
