Congrats to them.

Curious now, what does one need to do to become a luthier? Is there a special guitar school?

It's a great series! It has become a regular high point of my day as i eat lunch in my car (not my choice, BTW, more of a covid necessity)

Hey Dave, You need to be able to build/repair guitars (or stringed instruments). There's no certification required to be called a luthier. Some pick it up guitar building on their own as a hobby, get good at it, and start selling. There are some 'build a guitar' sessions you can attend. Many were apprentices of other luthiers.

You've heard of Larrivee Guitars? Jean Larrivee started building guitars in Toronto in the late 60s/early 70s and he took on some apprentices such as Linda Manzer (ever heard of the Manzer Wedge), Gret Laskin, and David Wren among others. They are all well respected luthiers and sell their guitars for many $ thousands each.
