Only one of my guitars has open-back tuners: a Recording King ROS-06-FE3. I do not like the tuners, but only because they are cheaply made. They have stiff points as you turn them, loose in some places, stiff in others. Makes it a chore to tune. But, I love the look of open-backs, and being a gear-head, I like the idea of being able to clean and inspect from time to time.

Is it recommended to oil open-backs a bit every now & then?

I should mention that I replaced the factory tuners because one of them was binding.

Actually, there is a fairly decent write-up, on the StewMac website, about that very thing. They recommend Vasoline.
