open back tuners
I've used Grover 18:1 sta-tite open back tuners, and are a big fan of them. I've also used Waverlies, and while they are very nice, I don't see the cost difference. What about other brands? Anything else approach Waverly quality, within a StaTite budget?

I’m very happy with the Gotoh vintage butterbean , incredibly steady tuning and great look

I prefer closed back tuners as they have a more finished look.

I have gold/tortoise Waverlys on my 2004 Martin SWOMGT. I replaced the almost identical appearing stock open-back butterbeans on my 2018 D-18 with Gotoh SE700's.
The Gotohs are a noticeable improvement over the stock D-18 tuning machines, and are at least as good as the Waverlys on my OM. My Waverlys cost $220. The Gotoh's were found new on E-bay for $50. Guess which tuners are going on my next guitar? |

I find they all work fine. I'm only sure about the tuners that are on one of my guitars. That's only because it was a custom build. Other than that I find they work the same.

When I grew up, open back tuners were the hallmark of a poor tuner, susceptible to dust which would make them bind up. When you saw enclosed tuners, you knew you had something.
Things have changed for the better. Or maybe good ones were there all along and I just never ran across them. The one set I have is on my most expensive guitar and works just fine. Lightens the head a bit too.

Schaller GS look really nice. I had them on a Santa Cruz and was happy with them.

I really like the retro open back look, one of the many reasons I went with the OM-28. I just wish I could remember what the heck brand they are. Drat! I can never remember what brand they are! Can someone help? I know I can look, but I'm not at my guitar right now...

I have Grover open-backs on one guitar and Wilkensons on another. The Wilkensons have a smoother, more precise feel than the Grovers, and they are only about $30.

I really want to get a set for my 000 sized and my dread sized guitars. I just can't justify the cost right now. The Waverly's and Grovers are way out of my price range but Gotoh make a nice affordable set which I might get. |

Wilkinson! I forget they exist sometimes. Thanks for the tip, for $30 I must check them out.

I use whatever comes on the guitars I have.
I don't consider them jewellery, just things to tension my guitars. Most of my guitars have Waverlies and I have had some issues and received replacements from StewMac/Waverly F.O.C. I have a Santa Cruz with Gotoh 501s(?) I don't like them that much, and the gold plating is wearing off. Not totally happy with gold plate on gear parts. They seem a little less well made than the Waverlies.

Weirdly enough, I like the apparently stock (Ping?) tuners on my Eastman E6OM way more than the Grover Sta-Tites I had on another guitar. They feel much smoother, and hold tune just as well.
That being said, I've never really understood the appeal of open back tuners. I certainly don't mind them (after all, they do they job they're supposed to), but it's always seemed like sealed tuners were an obvious technological improvement. Is it just about having a retro look? |
