Default What guitars do you string with Monels?

What are your expectations when you use monels? Is it a particular guitar, a playing style, or both?

I've never used monels, have a pack, and am trying to decide what guitar to string up. What are you trying to achieve when you use monels?

I know I can try them and see what I think, but thought this was an opportunity to ask a more general question.

Thanks.

It probably won’t help you, but I use them on my Waterloo.

I have them on my Martin JDP II.
Italian Alpine Spruce/Mahogany.
They are fine on this guitar for any playing style.

They didn't sound right on my Rosewood guitar, haven't tried them on Maple.

A lot of people say they sound best on all mahogany guitars (they sound great on mine). But I recently put them on my Sinker redwood/wenge guitar and they sound good as well.

I'd put them on any guitar I wanted.

The better the guitar, the better they'll sound. And that sound, on my guitar was more "wooden", less 'new string" tone, and didn't last very long. They were like nicely broken strings from the first strum and then faded over about 3-4 weeks, far sooner than other premium strings.

Oddly, I hear other people report a completely different tone. Subjectivity rules.

I've found that Monel works very well on my 000-18 but my Brook Torridge seems to sound nicer with John Pearse.

I’ve never found a rhyme or reason to the guitar I like them on. I hated them on my d18, but liked them on my 000-18. I preferred D’addario Nickel Bronze on my d18, but hated those on my Larrivee OM-03. I like Retros on my eastman AC320, and the E1OM I had. All these guitars are similar wood-wise, and size wise (dread and 000), so I’ve never been able to say except by trying them. If I get a new guitar, I always give them a go just to see. Cheap experiment.

I tried them once, but removed them hours later and threw them away.
They sounded horrible and as dead old strings.

FWIW, my preferred sound is phosphor bronze.

I like Monels on my Composite Acoustics OX a lot. They’re just ok on my CA Cargo

Hmmm. I started to think which of my guitars had these on and I looked at my chart - Alvarez AP66SB (00). Only problem is I put them on 1/13/18. I guess they're ready to come off

I use Custom Light (11-52) Martin Retros on my 3 acoustic guitars for soft feel, clear note and string separation, little or no added overtone content, no shredding of coated material, low tension on the neck. My go-to strings used to be 80/20 D’Addario lights, which provided much of the above, but I’ve found monels provide slightly more transparency to the bass.
