I was at the Twin Cities Guitar Show today. Brian had I believe 5 guitars there. Wonderful instruments!

When we last left our hero, he was bending sides with a sound port already cut and bound. The gasp from the crowd was audible...
Today's update shows the neck and tail blocks already installed as Brian cuts the dovetail mortise for the neck using a handy-dandy router and jig. |

Thanks to everyone who has expressed interest in this particular build, and more importantly, in Brian's body of work overall. I wish I could have been at the Twin Cities show to spend time with Brian and his guitars in person!
Another comment on the Brazilian Rosewood that I didn't mention earlier - the back and side pieces are actually flitch matched, coming from successive cuts of the same piece of timber. Sometimes builders visually look for a "close match" of sides and backs that came from different logs, different sources at different times. You can't get a closer match than these. A small spoiler alert for those who like to follow these threads and criticize the bling... We have decreed that this guitar will have sea snails, aka mollusks, aka abalone, aka shells! You've been warned. |

Adding a touch of tradition to this body size, and wanting the bridge in the sweet spot of the lower bout, we went with 12 frets to body. If this were a 14 fret to body, I would not have done a cutaway. Since it's just 12, I decided on a Florentine style cutaway.
The perspective of this shot makes for some optical illusions. So, while the side thickness looks different, for example, they're really the same. |

Making braces today. Brian says, "Very unexciting." Bob says, "One step closer to playing my guitar is VERY exciting." I'll let you all be the judges…

End wedge today...
This is the first time seeing the Koa and BRW together with the paua purfling. Thoughts? The body binding will be Koa as well to tie things together with a bit of contrast. Last edited by bobernet; 08-26-2016 at 05:13 PM. |

End graft looks gorgeous. Your purfling / binding is going to pop against the BRW. AWESOME choice.

Braces are glued via vacuum table. These things are so cool!
Top first or back first? With Brian, it's top first. Getting glued today... Last edited by bobernet; 08-30-2016 at 01:23 PM. |
