Right now I'm just strumming it all the way through in C and I'm using a Steam Train rhythm on the C's at the ends of the lines. If I can get together with my banjo playing buddy over the weekend, maybe we can turn into something. Later, I can work some stuff into my part.
So, I'm doing the last two lines of the chorus like this; G..........C........................C............. ......Am...D7 I'm the train they call the City of New Orleans Am.......F...G............................C And I'll be gone 500 miles when the day is done (the dots are there to keep the chords in place) What's the better version? I had it all typed in then must've taken too long and got timed out...
This is transposed from the sheet music that came out following Arlo's hit w/it (the sheet's in G, but every time I've seen Steve do it it's in C)...hope it helps C...…………………………………..G...…………….Am......Am7....D7 I'm the train they call the City of New Orleans D7..... Eb………...F...……….G...…………………...G9.....C I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done Okay, I don't play the ninth chord, but that's the "Factory" version... I was listening to Prine's "Sweet Revenge" cd on the drive into work tonight...man, wish I could hear it w/Steve's guitar work punched up...really masterful picking there... |

I must be doing something wrong since I'm doing it in C and ending up with the same chords in the same places. It sounds good to me, but what do I know. I'll find a version in G and take a look at it.
It's such a cool song, with so many chord changes, you can really get a lot out of it just strumming. And it's one of those songs that you already know before you try to learn it. |

And, honestly, if it sounds good that's all that really matters...I've changed the chord progression on a couple Prine tunes 'cause I just can't sing them the same way he does... So long as we're enjoying it and the cops don't show up, good on us!!! |

I think it's important not to call the authorities on a whim.
Now, if a banjo shows up..... |

But I can hear it. It will sound great with a finger picked banjo. We can't get together over the week-end. Then I'm going back upstate. We will have to wing it at our next jam! |

So now I'm doing this;
G..........C........................C............. ......Am...D7 I'm the train they call the City of New Orleans ...............Am.....F.....G.............F....... ........C And I'll be gone 500 miles when the day is done and it just works! |

I coulda sworn there was a Bb in there, near the end of the refrain, but now it appears even Goodman doesn't play it. Maybe Arlo's version has it.

I have no doubt that there are better, more authentic, ways to do it but, with me doing it, the Am, little F, slide up to little G, back to F, C are just one shot on each so it's more the rhythm that matters.
My banjo playing buddy and I are practicing it separately but we'll try it together at the Tuesday Jam. It's going to be rough, but I think it will work out great. Good thing I have the Martin Jumbo to keep him blowing me away! i Last edited by lowrider; 09-21-2019 at 05:49 AM. |

I play it in D. Works better for my voice...
