Hi Dion, it will be nice to see you at LaConner this year.
Looking forward to your guitars as well. What do you think of the Ipe? The little I've handled was as hard as nails, and quite heavy. But it is reputed to be nearly weather-proof, often used in outdoor applications. I think you should advertise this guitar accordingly. Beach guitar? White-water-rafting picker? Niagara strummer? Why not? Steve |

I got the idea from my old shop mate Jeremy Clark, who got the idea from Burton Legeyt.

Agreed, I’m really looking forward to La Conner this year. It was a blast last year and I expect it will be even better this year. It’ll be wonderful to see your work and find further inspiration! I really like Ipe, heavy and really hard on tools but I love it as a tone wood. I built a guitar for the first Santa Barbara show that had ipe back and sides, it really had great projection and was quick to respond. I’ve been using it for fingerboards as well, nice stuff! I like the idea of advertising this one to the outdoor enthusiasts! Built to respond, sure to last, IPE!

Carbon fibre rods are in. I epoxy these in while the neck is bolted in place in order to maintain the proper angle of the fingerboard tenon.

Theses shots were taken taken just before final sanding. Both guitars are now on their way to have the shine applied.

I’ll carve the necks next and finish them in house.

Here’s a video of the necks being ebonized. I use an iron oxide solution, the process is beautiful to watch.
