Default Muting strings during fingerstyle.. (Jason Mraz)

So I've been trying to learn Jason Mraz - Live High from a songbook I just received.

It has a ton of muting in it, and I just don't know how to strum fast enough, or do I use my fingers to pluck the muted string or what?

Anyways, here's some examples from the song that just completely befuddle me on how to play them:

--------------------------------
-----------2-----X-------------
-----------2-----X---------2---
------2-------------------------
--0-------------------X--------
--------------------------------

--------------------------------------
------------5-------X-----------------
------------4-------X-----------X----
---------6----------------------------
--4-----------------------X-----------
---------------------------------------

Any suggestions on how to play these muted strings would be great. I tried listening to the song, but it's really hard to actually define it!

Try watching these videos. You mute by lifting up the bar chord a little while strumming or slapping. Some of it is choking off the chord, and some is rhythm hand slaps against the strings. Probably helps to practice the movement some, and then try not to over think it. It's a natural sounding rhythm, so try to copy the sound, by sort of spacing a little. That works for me anyway.

Okay, thanks, that video makes sense.
It looks like the starting mute he does a light string slap, and then the other muted notes he just hits with his fingers (?)..I guess I'm gonna need a bit more of practice xD

Also does anyone know why he keeps his pinky under his strings like that? Is that for extra percussion or a guitar technique?

His pinkie is being used as an "anchor". It helps some players stabilize their playing hand and find the strings easier, especially while moving around with a guitar. It's a fingerstyle technique. He's not using it for percussion.

Have fun.
