Puzzled by projection

Thanks to everyone who responded. I think I have a pretty good understanding of what most people mean by ‘projection’ - it’s more about how the sound of an instrument is perceived by the audience, rather than the player.

Of course, there’s no certainty to the definition, but at least I have a mental picture that works for me. As I summarized it earlier:
