Isn't this like asking a vegetarian 'whats your favorite meat?'

Yes, it’s a beaut! Interestingly enough, I got this at The Music Emporium in Lexington, MA - in a trade for a Bourgeois Mahogany dreadnought that I owned. I had tried to sell the Bourgeois on consignment, and instead walked out with the Collings!

Lemme get this straight... your pal owns one of James Burton's actual guitars, not a reissue or something?

The neck shape is easier of my left hand and the body contour is easier on my right hand and arm. The guitar has suited my electric guitar needs (although few and not varied) for almost 40 years.

Adding in the case, strap, and a practice amp, the Gretsch saved me about $75.00 (a lot of cash back then).

I think I'll go play it some. Thanks for the reminder.
Now there's a model that I haven't even thought about in decades!

Besides the Gretsch and Kay shown upthread, I also still have the Rickenbacker 330 that I bought brand new in May 1984, when I was 20. It was one of the last guitars made while F.C. Hall still owned the company, so it has the quirky old-style trussrods and narrow headstock. The Grover Rotomatics are factory-installed, very unusual on a Rickenbacker. The guitar is very heavy, around 8lbs. I wonder if the fretboard isn't dark walnut or something.

I have never seen another 330 made in 1984, so I guess they weren't too popular at that time. I had to special-order it, in fact.

It recently suffered some flood damage (heartbreaking!) and is currently out being repaired:

I also have a Fender Japan '62 Tele reissue that I bought from a Japanese dealer before Fender US blocked their importing to the USA. These are wonderful instruments if you can find them. Using Scotchbrite, I sanded down the thick poly finish on the back of the neck, making it feel more like a genuine '60s neck, not so sticky.

It is interesting to see how many people have voted for the Telecaster. I've gone through dozens of different guitars over the decades. Les Pauls both HB and P90 versions, Stratocasters (argh!), Gretsch's, Yamaha SG's and SA's, 335 semi hollow bodies, jazz boxes and yet I've settled on the Tele as my main electric. It is just a great fundamental guitar that doesn't help you nor does it fight you. You get out what you put in. My main Tele is a beat up old bar veteran that was basically a musical petrie dish of foul human, alcohol and nicotine residue when I bought it. It says Fender on the headstock but I have my doubts. A neck that isn't what I usually prefer being somewhat slender, mismatched ferrules, huge dents and dings, rusted hardware and who knows what but it has something my other tele's don't have personality, it fits me and responds to me always. I've done some mods over the years, new lacquered bakelite PG, new brass bridge saddles, new vintage wound alnico pickups, new 250k audio taper tone pot (left the 500k volume pot....), treble bleed added, vintage tuners. Does it sound and play better than when I bought it? Maybe, maybe not, but its mine and there isn't another I would trade it for. My expensive custom shop Gibson LP's (all 3....) take a back seat 90% of the time. It is really something when you find one that fits.

P.S I hate Strats! I've tried for 50+ years to like them, owning and flipping many because I can't make them work. I think I finally realized 3 pickups are wrong for me.

This will be fun, so here goes:

Telecaster until I played a Music Man James Valentine. Does everything from Tele clean to 335 jazz tone. Crazy good 20dB boost as well. Awesome neck to boot.

My Strat, Les Paul, 335 and my Gretch Duo Jet (George Harrison reproduction). I'm playing more of the Gretch right now trying to master the song "Sleepwalk" as performed by Brian Setzer. I'll be on that journey a long, long time.

Default Current favorite

A recent acquisition is my Godin LGXT. It works well with my arthritic fingers, plays like butter, and is highly flexible with quasi acoustic undersaddle Baggs transducers, seymour duncans, and midi out, with complete flexibility to mix and match some or all of the above.

It has taken over the rotation for my acoustic in the band as my hands have become more problematic. I enjoy having the option of tossing in a little B3 organ or orchestral string sound just below the surface on some of our songs. It has a decent, workable acoustic sound that I round out by mixing a little neck pickup electric sound. And then there's the midi triggering that opens a wide, interesting world of possibilities.

I'd like to think being a "complete" guitarist generally means being comfortable on both electric and acoustic.

Had two acoustics before my mother bought my Strat 42 years ago. Since then, I've had 10 electrics and nine acoustics. Aside from the rosewood Tele that I want, PRS is the brand I associate with.
