At a Belgian luthier's suggestion (in the early 70's), I used BOILED linseed oil for my fretboards for decades... very sparingly and only once every few years. I'd smear a little over the fret board with my fingertips, and then wipe it down thoroughly... and then wipe it down again! Until the cloth I was using showed no signs of oil...

Never had an issue... I have found that if I'm playing a guitar frequently. the oil transfer from my fingers will, over time, continue to "refresh" the oils in the fretboard. Gauging from all I read on these pages, it seems that many members use oil on their fretboards FAR more than is either necessary or beneficial.

As I understand it, too much oil on the fretboard can actually CAUSE cracking... the oil gets jammed into the grain and separates, over time.

There is such a thing as "too much of a good idea", however well-meaning...
