I tripped across this today on You Tube. Homer Haynes was one of the best, and Jethro, well, as Chet introduced him one time: "The greatest mandolin player in captivity". It's sad that so few appreciated their greatness as musicians because of the comedy part of their act.

Good stuff!

As a kid, I enjoyed Homer & Jethro's humor. When I got a little older and started playing, I appreciated their musical skills. I used to watch Hee-Haw and wade through the corn pone skits to see Jethro perform with The Million Dollar Band. Hearing one of his solos made the investment of time worthwhile.

There are some other YouTube videos of H&J plus quite a few of Jethro playing with Chet, Steve Goodman and other musicians. Lots of great music in those clips.

Indeed. Here's one of my favorites of Chet and Jethro together from Austin City Limits. Sound is not great but you get the idea.

I got to meet Jethro Burns once when I was a teenager. Leon Redbone's tuba player (yes tuba player) took me backstage @ the Paladium in Dallas so that I could meet Leon Redbone. Back in the dressing room was Leon Redbone, Steve Goodman, and this old guy. They were all very kind to me and Leon introduced "Steve" and "Jethro". As soon as he said "Jethro" I made the connection and my jaw dropped. "Are you Jethro Burns?" I asked. "We'll, everybody is somebody, and that's who I am" he answered with a big smile and reached out and shook my hand.

Not quite so colorful... it's just chewing gum.

Johnny Carson once asked Homer, "Why do you chew chewing gum?"
Homer replied, "What the hell else you gonna do with it?"
