It's great all the systems now (pretty much) have comprehensive plugin/bus compensation. Cubase/Nuendo even allow you to sample match external channels that go to external processing (maybe others to now as well).

Man I remember so much pain dealing with this stuff before they figured it out.

I use Sonar X3. I've been a Sonar user since Sonar 7. Prior to that I used Cubase. I couldn't imagine trying to learn something new. I'm a bit shocked that it appears that I'm the only X3 user in this post so far. I primarily use 3rd party plugins, even though the prochannel within X3 sounds great. I'm just so used to, and happy with the 3rd party plugins that I use.
The customization features that are within X3 now are incredible.
