John Higgins in Kirkwood MO. Really a nice guy to deal with.

Very cool story, can't wait to see it. Reminds me of a '51 D-28 I recently saw that had black formica for at least 50% of the top, underneath it was completely gone and obviously needed a new top.

Sending good thoughts! I’ve played a great 50’s J-185 - they are special.

I suggesting you remove the pickguard , replace it with a close to original
see how the top looks before you decide to have it refinished -
sometimes refinishing hurts the sound and the value-take great care and be sure .

Thanks Phil- I think I've heard of him but don't know him. Thanks for the heads up, looking forward to seeing your project progress.

Great score and glad you're committing to it's rehabilitation. That guitar looks like it was used in a "Stand your Ground" situation, maybe after the chicken-wire stage barrier failed.

I like the suggestions for a more traditional type pickguard, but you might also consider going with NO pickguard (after all, that horse already left the barn), or possibly a thin, clear type guard like Larrivees used to have...let that tone shine through.

Chicks dig scars...

Super cool! I love it! Pickguard is funky but that makes it extra cool.

Picked up the J185 this afternoon and when John opened the case I was shocked. His repair and restoration exceeded my expectations. The best part by far is the sound, all I can say is Wow !!

Here’s a link to a few pics ( I never can figure out how to post them )

I hate to be the tactless fool that asks, but I'm sure that I'm not the only one who's curious what that kind of quality restoration would cost....congratulations on the addition!!
