I am quickly developing a great relationship with my Godin 5th Avenue - not only is she nice to look at, but she plays and sounds beautifully.

My '02 Vestax made D'Angelico New Yorker. I played at least 30 archtops of every available make in Mandolin Bros. when I went archtop shopping, and this was the best of the bunch. Well, the best under 10 grand to my ears, anyway.

Default Archtops

Guild X500, Gibson Le Grande. I wish I still had both of these.

It has to be my first "real" guitar... a 1964 Guild M-65 I got for a combined birthday/Christmas gift.

When in dire straits a number of years ago I had my brother sell it because I needed money. I found out years later that the buyer was my mom, so I still have my original Guild today.

If interested in arch tops, you might enjoy the book "Blue Guitar" by Ken Vose (published by Chronicle Books).

It is a look at the 22 arch top guitars commissioned by Scott Chinery.
Chinery commissioned some of the finest archtop builders of the day to make him guitars, the only requirement being that they be finished with the same lightning blue finish used on a Centura Deluxe built by Jimmy D'Aquisto that he owned.

The resultant collection is a fine example of the "art of the archtop", and has been shown at the Smithsonian Museum.

Builders include Benedetto Buscarino, Campellone, Comins, D'Leco guitars, Fender and Gibson custom shop, Grimes, Hollenbeck, Mark Lacey, Bozo Podunavac, Jim Triggs, Collings Manzer, Megas, Monteleone, Nickerson, Ribbecke, Scharpach, Walker, Zeidler.

...and if you want to hear those guitars, played in sequence in 20 second segments, get 'Masterpiece Guitars' by Martin Taylor and Steve Howe who were given unfettered access to the Chinery collection to make an outstanding record featuring some amazing vintage and modern instruments.
The track featuring the blue guitars is, of course, 'Blue Bossa'.

Thanks for the information. Didn't know that.

You're welcome. I figured that if someone was in the market for a bespoke archtop that track would make a great taster and help in choosing. The variety of tones on offer is surprising.

Wow, I didn't know about this either, thanks! After a brief Google search I'm having trouble finding a good description of the album, specifically what guitars were used on each track. What exactly do you mean by 20 second segments? They switch guitars mid-song? I think I'll order it so I'll find out eventually.
