Nylon Crossover Guitar
I am considering a nylon crossover instrument. The Taylor 312N is on my possibility list. Has anyone have played this instrument? How does it sound unplugged? I don't expect a concert classical guitar, but decent volume would be nice.

For awhile I was seriously considering a crossover. Cordoba offers several - they look like traditional classics, but have 1.75 nut with a radiused fretboard.

Check out some of the previous posted topics where crossovers are discussed. The Taylor is probably the least suggested crossover due to it being overbuilt to perform as a nylon strung guitar.
I own a Cordoba Fusion Orchestra crossover that's a very nice instrument. I have some crossover info posted HERE. |

I believe Cordoba crossovers have a 48mm (1 7/8") nut width.

I have a cordoba c10 crossover with a 1 7/8” nut width, and that width is a good compromise, at least for me. A little extra space for classical playing, it not so wide that it gets unwieldy with other genres

Typo. I knew that. Thanks for the correction!

I've owned a Taylor NS-34ce for about 12 years that I bought used through this Forum. In that span of time I've owned quite a few steel-stringed guitars, some that have been sold and replaced, yet the Taylor nylon crossover remains. I do not have experience with other crossovers such as the Cordoba line and would enjoy A-B comparing them against Taylor's Crossovers but that hasn't happened. I sometimes think of upgrading this guitar with a Rosewood body version and if I get serious, a Taylor would be in the mix to consider. The build quality and playability are positives while it's lack of response and projection are what I usually read as negatives.

I have owned two different Taylor nylon crossover guitars and was not happy with the responsiveness. I bought in the last few years a Cervantes Concert Crossover 1 from Dream Guitars. It's an excellent guitar, but a little on the expensive side.
These guitars are available used for better prices. - Glenn

I have the Furch GN4 SR and I love it so much that I sold my nylon Lowden.

I once owned a NS42CE which is similar. I've found the tone and volume of Taylor nylon string guitars muted and not very responsive. My experience is there are other crossovers I liked better that are priced the same or less.
I also owned a Cordoba Fusion 12 Orchestra. It had a more tradition classical tone. It was a very good guitar for the price. Some notes about it though: The pickup was cheapish and I switched it for a LR Baggs. The main fit/finish detail, or lack there of, was the frets were not dressed along the fretboard which I had to correct. I sold it because I wanted a more contemporary tone that sounded better with my steel string oriented music. Presently I own a discontinued Yamaha APX5NA which is a decent guitar after a little work and a Takamine TC135SC. I enjoy my Takamine TC135SC very much and really like the unplugged and amplified tone. To optimize the plugged-in tone, I added a soundboard transducer on the aux side of the preamp. My Takamine is decently responsive and open for this price point guitar. I've also had the opportunity to play some boutique builder models like the Kirk Sands and Buscarino Startlight. Those guitars command boutique prices and worth every penny of those prices. Although I have mostly been a steel string player, in recent years, crossover guitars have become my preference. I don't see myself going back.

I like the Taylor nylon string guitars a lot, but I prefer the Cordoba GK. It just feels better to me. The most amazing crossover I'd played was Rick Turner's Renaissance model.
