Just curious: Engelmann top over Wenge back & sides?
Has is it ever been done? I've played a wenge guitar with a lutz top that is easily in my top 5 favorites but I was wondering how a "mellower" top wood like Engelmann would sound?

Dunno Neil, but sounds good to me. I had an englemann on cocobolo, and it was rich and full - lots of overtones. I've heard wenge is much the same as far as family of tones - rosewood type, lots of overtones and richness.

I am fortunate enough to own a Mustapick Aurora with that combination of tonewoods. It's the first wenge guitar I've played. I've only had it for a week, and may still be in a bit of a "honeymoon" period with it, but it sounds fabulous. It is exactly what I was hoping for - very balanced and super responsive, with fat, round highs and articulate lows.
Of course, the sound probably reflects Matt's design philosophy and ability more than the woods, but I know that he has posted enthusiastically about wenge before.

I've built with wenge. It's a pain to work with for a lot of reasons, but I think it's as close to an ideal back and side wood as it could be.

My customer for this guitar wanted it to be very responsive to a very light touch, and that's why we chose Engelmann spruce...to get a head start in that direction. I wouldn't describe this guitar as mellow though. I think it's very lively. I liked it very much.
