I forget why I opened an account years ago, but like you, when unbidden stuff started showing up, I dumped it pronto. I am seriously anti-facebook and besides, I do not like Zuckerburg one bit.

Social media can be decidedly anti-social for sure.

I went on an internet diet in Apr. No more FB, news, etc. Cancelled and unsubscribed from everything. Best thing I ever did. Only thing I use the internet for now is google searches, AGF and emails.

I tried FB at my families request about a decade ago....folks from the past started showing up like crazy....only a few of whom I was pleased to hear from....I shut my account down within a month....I found the platform intrusive if not downright invasive and I much prefer to socialize face to face and leave my internet time to geek out with fellow guitar nerds here on AGF...

Nahhh, you’d still have to see all your friends and family doing stuff you don’t care about.

I use Facebook daily.

I also have Instagram and Twitter accounts, but I use them far less frequently...

I have family all over the country so its nice to be able to see what they and their kids and grandkids are up to without blowing two hours on the phone getting a verbal update. If one of my friends or neighbors get too political I just unfollow them for a while until they get over it,

I think though as we get older, there's a lot of positive things to be said about "sticking our heads in the sand."

I am very interested in "how" you became clean and sober from Facebook. Did you actually deactivate your account or just got rid of the app and the messenger app and let the chips fall where they may? I have read up on actually deleting a facebook account and it is not the easiest thing going, especially for a non-techno geek like me. thanks

It's interesting to see how so many think Facebook is intrusive and overwhelming - as they write that personal information to other AGF'ers they don't know and have never met. Hilarious. "Those Beatle's need a hair cut...get off my lawn....". The other 98% of AGF'ers won't respond because - they're off on Facebook.

It's pretty easy - use it if/when you want and don't log in when you don't. Just like here. It doesn't come searching for you. I check in periodically to check up on those I know that have spread around the country. If I need, or want, to speak with them, I call. Twenty-first century issues that are user caused.

I dumped a bunch of "friends" that were accumulated during a time I was playing out with a singer/songwriter and people wanted to follow us. Then I dumped real life friends whose political pontifications were causing me to view them in a negative light, I'd rather keep them as real friends. Then I dumped everyone but family and closest friends ... tired of cute kitties, lost dogs, sob stories asking for contributions to this scam or that, stories of people's fairy tale lives, love sonnets to significant others ... etc, etc, etc, etc ... ad infinitum.

But the more you dump, the more FB's algorithms try to fill the void with absolutely worthless ads, political garbage, scams, etc. etc.

Now I only look for family posts and pics. It is what it is. Worth every penny you pay for it.

How on earth are you going to know what people are having for their breakfast?

A few month ago someone put up a 'hands up anyone who has never seen an episode of Game of Thrones' vote on FB. One person commented they had never seen an episode 'Cause they don't follow BS'. To which someone asked 'Well what are you doing on FB then?'

Made me smile and summed it up. (But I still keep looking).

I've had a Facebook account for many years. I go by an alias name. I have 3 friends. I turn down every friend suggestion and request. This keeps it manageable and allows me to exchange pictures and information with my 3 friends, join and participate in groups, post, look around, use Facebook Marketplace etc.

AGF and a few other forums (that I am interested in) are the extent of my social media.

No Facebook, twitter, or what ever else is out there. Yes, I'm old. OK, Boomer.
