Default What pick up for Gibson V?

Hi, I'm looking to mod a Gibson V. New pick ups, tone, volume, pick guard, etc. It's just a project I'm thinking about because the pick ups that it has look grooved by low strings.

Any way, thanks for looking and any ideas would be fun to chat about.

Well, I have Tonerider Alnico IVs in my Les Paul Tribute - nice open sound if you play cleanish. But I do heartily recommend toneriders in general.

I modded an Epi korina V for my son. He wanted a classic sound so we put in a pair of Seymour Duncan pickups, a JB SH-4 for the bridge and a SH-1 59. Wow! They made the guitar sound fantastic. More, HERE.

Awesome. I'm waiting to get a price on the Pearlys but I may price out those too.

I went with a set of Lollar Imperials and very happy I did. The tone is thick, full and beefy, not thin and tinny like the ones it had.

The only hard part was waiting for the iron to heat, haha. Then heat the wire, pop it off, new stuff in, a little dab will do ya, springs, screws, slap the guard on and raise the pickups to the sound you like.

Funny thing, SD had a line of pick ups that have a worn, vintage look., like the ones I took out, haha. I'll post some pics if anybody wants.

Lots of pics of Billy Gibbons from the mid 70s (Fandango Period) playing what looks like a late 50s V with the brass string through V beneath the ABR. This guitar would have had PAFs. Gibbons is widely known for blowing a lot of smoke about his rigs, but if you listen to the live side of Fandango, that sounds like HBs through a screaming Fender combo like a Deluxe or Deluxe Reverb with a push from a fuzz pedal. That sound is more about the amp and his funky style than the pups.

They were a common sight on the Austin, Houston, New Orleans circuit during the mid 70s. I saw them in Louisiana during this time period.
