Chord progression based finger style composing
Today I had an inspiration while I was practicing a tune and I decided to stop working on the cover and see what I could come up with using my "inspiration." I got about 10 measures in (I notate as I compose usually) and then I got stuck.
What I had done sounded fairly pleasant and I didn't want to abandon it. So for once I thought about what I was doing instead of letting the guitar/tuning guide me. I looked at my first note to determine the key, and found a progression that I thought I could use and went with it. First time I used any kind of theory to write something. I'll see how things go this week and see if I can get a recording done. It's a simple tune, but relaxing to play. Hopefully it will be relaxing for others to listen to. This was fun though. I think its an approach I'm going to stick with in the future as it was much easier to work this way.

Hi Barry....yep, I do similar things....however I'll bet you're further along than me in the theory department!
One item that works for me.....finding a chord or note that is the relative minor 6th in a progression to change things up for some kind of bridge, or just individual notes to satisfy the ear. It might take a while to work out and may not be exactly the way things eventually emerge with a tune when finished, but does help to offer a pathway from where you get stuck.
