The BIG guitar party at Tom's family's home in Texas last year was BIG FUN. Michael Watts was mind bendingly good! Frog and Toad were wonderful too!!!

I got to jam with MW and I had a blast. He seemed to enjoy it too.

As for Bog Oak, you can't argue with the tone on that video, and JK can make pretty much anything sound fantastic.

Is it spoken for yet?

Cheers

Not yet.
I'm thinking the brown set will be a West Coast OM that probably will make it to Woodstock. Hopefully 2021

Not sure what to do with the black set yet. thinking on it.

Absolutely right John. Not a bad time to remind folks that Bob Taylor built a pretty nice sounding guitar from discarded pallet wood several years ago to make a point about sustainable woods.

I would also think John has the experience to tap test the wood before he turns it into a guitar and have a good feel if the path forward will result in success.

What a story that wood could tell us if that age is accurate!

yeah - except a vast majority of that story might be, "I'm lying under the dirt in a bog" -

And i have heard that Ramirez built a guitar body out of paper mache (with a spruce top) just to demonstrate how important the top was. Is that a guitar myth or did it really happen?

That’s funny. But there was a time when that entire area of England was forested with Really big Oaks and what a sight that must have been.

Well, under the MUD in a bog, but still...

And I have played one of the fabled Taylor pallet guitars. They made 20 or so.
As I heard the story from folks there then, Bob hauled a pallet out of one of their dumpsters. He had folks build the first one using pallet oak for the back and sides and pallet pine for the four piece top. Lots of aluminum fills in the nail holes. Regular Ebony Fretboard and Mahogany neck.
It sounded dang good. The Fretboard inlay of a forklift was a bit much for me, but why not show off.
Then they did the same thing another 19 or 24 times just cause they could. Hahaha

BTW, the 96 K15c I have FS sounds WAY BETTER .... (ALMOST as good as one of John's!)

Salud

Paul

OK challenge accepted. I’m going to make a West Coast OM using this set of Oak. It’s a spec guitar for the Woodstock show that I HOPE will be held in 2021

here is the inspiration. I like the overall look of the browns but i think maybe a little really dark binding would be nice. Perhaps curly mahogany purfling lines

Cool wood, John. I was looking through the thread and wondering if you had a build lined up for the set, but I saw in a recent post you are going to do a spec build. I'll have to follow along. I would imagine bog oak has a few more minerals in it than new growth oak. That should make it somewhat denser. I'm sure if you pair it with a nice top, you will get a great sounding guitar. Let's see your magic!

Ken

Thanks for checking in Ken.
I think you are right about the density. I'm wondering if the sides will bend like you would expect oak to bend or if it will put up more of a struggle.
I'm thinking of pairing it with a tunnel 14 top.

John

John, how large is this piece, ie. what size guitar could you get out of it?
Well 4,000 years ago the locals in Norfolk up rooted one, turned it upside down then half buried it in the coastal saltmarsh to use it's upturned root plate for sky burials, so the eagles and winged scavengers could deal with the last remains, what a way to go.
