I’ve heard Bonnie sing this live a number of times and every time she brings something new to it, it’s never like she’s “going through the motions” even though she must have sung it a thousand times. Her version of “Angel from Montgomery” is also special. A true artist.

This song has a special memory for me too.
My best friend Don Hendry was born a few days before or after me. I can't remember which now. we met in a blues club listening to Jo-Anne Kelly who asked me to come up and play her 12 string guitar behind her whilst she played slide on a National (IIRC). Then ,at the break, he bought me a Guinness and congratulated me. We became fast friends and went to Folk Fests and big name concerts in London for when he always seemed to get the best seats. Don was a hard working, diligent, caring functional alcoholic. One night , late, late, after some concert -Albert Hall I think, we were sitting in his "music room" and he had some sort of limited edition re-mixed version of this song by Bonnie Raitt. he played it over and over on his super duper stereo. The bass line by James Hutchinson was more prominent, and clear, as was Hornsby's oh so sensitive piano. As an ex drummer I always listen to that too, very subtle - perfect. Perfection. I sipped a glass of scotch and he downed a bottle. He worked, and he drank too much. For that moment I witnessed my old pal in heaven. It was 2004. I'd long been suggesting that he retire. He said tat he couldn't as all his employee's and their families depended on him. In October I was going to Texas to visit with friends. I called him to ask if he'd like me to bring him anything. He giggled and told me that by the time I get back he'd really be retired as his partners had offered to buy him out retaining all staff. He'd be a millionaire and we could go to concerts, sit and play guitar and talk trash, like we never did enough. Three weeks later I returned and there was a letter waiting for me .. from Don. he wanted me to come up asap and "audit" his expansive guitar collection and to supervise selling it off for his wife. I phoned him - he had pancreatic cancer and had decided to refuse treatment. He got worse very quickly. Towards the end, his wife wouldn't let me near him. I'm afraid I cried at his funeral before Christmas 2004. I don't know what she did with his guitars, or his enormous music collection. I think of him almost every day. Especially when I hear Bonnie Raitt singing this song.

This song still gets me. I read that she did that vocal in just one take, unable to recapture the initial emotion of it on subsequent takes.
She has a new record called "Just Like That" which is pretty wonderful. It just came out, and I bought the LP. Been watching her in recent interviews and she's just such an amazing talent. Been a fan since my teenage years. |

Beautiful song in every way…musically, lyrically and emotionally.
