Not sure how the wings are adding any structure with the gap under them.

I seem to remember that Ned Milburn posted a pic of a guitar bridge he had made which utilized a similar concept.... I thought it was quite ingenious.
Ned hasn't posted for a while but maybe he will see this thread and repost his picture. |

Here's a variant, made of stamped sheet metal.
Not appropriate to discuss "tone" with this thing. Note the height-adjustable "saddle."

It's another pinless bridge where all the tension is on the bridge which, theoretically, could pull off or snap. Not too good an idea IMO. With a bridge with pins, most of the tension is on the bridgeplate inside the guitar which is further supported by the top of the guitar and the bridge.

In practice, there are thousands of old Harmony Sovereigns with pinless bridges still being played which have never had the bridge lift. No doubt there are some isolated instances of bridge lifting, but there are plenty of instances of pinned bridges lifting as well. Lowdens also ... how many Lowdens have ever had the bridge lift ? No doubt somebody will pipe up and say "I had to fix a Lowden bridge which separated" but the instances will be few and far between. In practice, IMO the properly attached pinless bridge is just as effective and durable a method of construction as the traditional pinned bridge, although of course neither I nor anybody else have the statistics to prove or disprove. That said, personally I hate them ... not being able to pull out and replace the strings easily and quickly is a real pain. The concept in the patent (and similar to what Ned Milburn posted some time ago ) would be a real improvement. |
