I’m looking forward to this build. Pretty wood. I’m building a cocobolo guitar myself and am anxious to see what you bind this guitar with.

Hi John! Thanks for watching. I'm thinking its going to be some nice landscapey cocobolo for binding. The guitar will have a couple of bevels, too, and I love how a little spiderwebbing looks on the bevels. Plus, I'm looking for a very rich, top shelf look- and what delivers that better than cocobolo?

Oh, yeah. I count myself as lucky that I have no problem with cocobolo as an irritant. I love it as an accent wood, and for backs and sides. What I don't love is thicknessing it!

Wilborn Guitars Mutiscale Fingerboard
A lot of preliminary work is going into the WarHorse. This is going to be a multi scale instrument. I've never built a multi scale guitar before. I figure its just like all the other things I didn't know how to do before, and now do. So, I called up my Frientor. I just made this word up, and its a combination of Friend and Mentor. (That's a portmanteau if you want to get fancy) My frientor is Bruce Sexauer, because not only is he an exceptional person to be friends with, but he also happens to have an answer for any question I've ever had about building guitars, and has been willing, lucky me, to share his knowledge. So Bruce "just happened" to have a template for a multi scale fretboard that he duplicated from a CNC'd master template he had made years ago in aluminum. AND it works for the scales I am going to imploy- 24.9 on the treble, 25.4 on the bass. Lucky me! My frientor sent me said template.
My next task was to devise a sled for my table saw to firmly hold the template and fingerboard blank as the slots are cut. Here's a confession: I like to design and build jigs just as much as I like to build guitars. In my eyes it's really a part of the same process. By understanding the mechanics involved in making a part for a guitar, you come to understand the whole process from a deeper level than if you had just purchased a jig and used it, or worse yet, purchased an already fabricated part. So I glared at this template and thunk real hard until I came up with a design I thought would work, and then I spent a day building it. The result is made of lovely green phenolic laminated Finn-ply and parts I machined from phenolic resin (Bakelite). I think its pretty sweet looking, and it works like a charm! The last photo is the Gaboon ebony fingerboard itself, with its very precisely placed fret slots. The big white part is Bruce's template. |

I have been using the "Master Template" that generated Ben's "Clone Template" for something like 15 years. I also have a fixture for implementing the templates use, and while mine does the job accurately and consistently enough that I am unlikely to ever need to replace it . . . Ben's implementation is SOOO beautiful (Do NOT ask to see mine) that I am suffering a serious case of FAS; Fixture Acquisition Syndrome.
The Template is not a one trick pony. Using Ben's Fixture (or mine) it can make a MultiScale fingerboard with the short string as low as 24" and long string as much as 26.5", and at the same time the perpendicular fret can be placed wherever you like, though I have good reasons for putting it at the 12th. The one caveat is that this fixture will ALWAYS be 1/2" difference (+/-) between the string length extremes. It is also capable, with another fixture nut the same template, of cutting any parallel fret finger board with a string length between 24.2 and 26.5, with infinite variability and a 10 second turnaround on any length change. I can hardly wait to see how Ben implements this second fixture. |

That is pretty cool. Nice word too Bensaurus, another portmanteau apparently.

Bindings and purflings
I like to make my own bindings and purflings. I can make each guitar unique, and have real control over the look.
Whole kit.jpg It starts with thicknessing some veneers on my trusty drum sander. Then I cut veneers to size (these are maple, black fiber and dyed blue poplar). thicknessing.jpg veneers cut.jpg veneers cut2.jpg I stack these up into glued "logs", and when they are dry, I cut them into strips on my mini table saw. glue cauls.jpg glued up.jpg Purfling saw.jpg Whole kit.jpg cut bindings.jpg The last pic is a mock-up of the rosette materials. rosette materials.jpg |

Nice quotes...
"Frenitor", and:
"So I glared at this template and thunk real hard until I came up with a design I thought would work, and then I spent a day building it." Well put, and well done! You guys are way too smart for me... My dad used to say: "I ain't as dumb as some people thunk I are!" Ben this is a beauty, and I hope it makes it to B.I.G. Really looking forward to hearing Toad and Frog, and playing some of your instruments!!! Cheers Paul
