I haven't been Denise but I can tell you if you acknowledge their cricket team for just thrashing Australia here at home you'll instantly make 1.33 billion friends.

It’s a cultural experience unlike any other, the crowds are breathtaking, the air can be foul, the water uncertain, but WOW, it’s fantastic too !!
-be sure and post your impressions when you return.
Bon Voyage.

I've been there a couple of times for 2 months and also spent a month in Nepal each time. Last time was 11 years ago. You don't say how much time you have. Looks as though you may be staying in the north.
Ranthambore National Park is a great place to see tigers in the wild if that interests you.
Have one of the communal meals at the Golden Temple!
Check out the youtube videos on the "head bobble" if you're not familiar with it.
Don't know if they are still doing the do do on your shoes scam in Connaught Place {Dehli} They got me the first day I was in India 15 years ago. They didn't get any money from me though!
Have a wonderful time! India is an adventure.

Indiamike.com used to be a good source for travel info.

For the past few years I've been going once or twice a year for work. I spend most of my time in Bangalore but have also spent time in Pune, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Delhi.

Here's a snap from my lone Delhi trip two years ago. I was only in town for an overnighter and just happened to be staying at the same hotel as the Dalai Lama. He was giving the commencement speech at a local university and had returned from that engagement while I was waiting in the hotel lobby for my ride to the airport. Sorry for the low quality of the photo, but it was an iPhone and I was a little shaky given the moment.

Enjoy your trip. If you see His Holiness, tell him I send my regards.

Austin

Yes, I know the head bobble! In fact, I know a fair amount of Indian lore and culture having been a bit of an Indiafile since I first read Be Here Now (way back when). Don't know why I've never been there before now. My husband and I are going with a tour outfit. It'll be our first group tour. We tend to go to foreign countries, rent cars and carom around ourselves missing alot along the way, I'm sure. But it seemed like a good idea to go with a group to India. The group is limited to 12 people, so I hope it will be ok. We'll be there for about 3 weeks. The trip to the Golden Temple (and yes, the idea is to help serve or clean up after a communal meal there) is something we added on at the end, and we're going to get to Delhi a couple of days before the trip starts. Should be seeing tigers at Panna. We'll be on a couple of overnight trains too! I'm most excited about Varanasi. If all goes well, we'll do Goa next year.

No, I don't mind. Well, there is so much story and history in India. I mean, the very cradle of civilization, right? There is so much variation and contrast in the people - mathematicians to saints and all manner of humanity between. The art, architecture, spices and gemstones -all exotic and colorful and real. And yes, I know there is filth and poverty and crime. It's ok. It's good to remember that there are bigger issues than what strings sound best on my guitar.

Borderdon expressed my expectations well!

Cipro is what you want. Immodium or lomotil, sure, but you gotta kill the pathogen not just block it up in there!

Best of luck for a great trip. Maybe if you find the time you could post a pic now and then of your trip.
