Default "Her favorite Song" - Larry Carlton

Hi friends of fingerstyle guitar music,

this is a tune of "Mr. 335" - Larry Carlton´s 1987 album "Discovery". Regarding the title, he may have written this tune for a
wellknown friend, but it is also one of my favourite tunes, too of the music he wrote.

In his original recording, it seems he had used a midi-guitar, because of a kind of pad-synth-sound behind his acoustic guitar, playing
almost the same notes that he picks. I tried to be close to his original playing using a pure steel string guitar sound of my
new Taylor 314CE-V.

Hope you like my recording of Larry Carlton´s tune....

greetings from Germany
Gerhard

It has been a long time since I listened to this Larry Carlton album. That is such a beautiful song and you play it so well. It was a great way to start my day.

“Her Favorite Song” and the “Lords Prayer” are my two favorite acoustic pieces by Larry. He wrote that song for his daughter Katie. Very nicely done (as usual) Gerhard (kudos).

Very nice. Thanks for sharing this.

I also play this song. It was transcribed in Frets magazine way back when and Larry provided some information on the guitar he used (I believe it was a luthier built BRW 12 fret 00) and the effects.

Hi Chuck,
thank you very much for your comment. Since about 25 years, I have that piece in my repertoire. Unfortunately I do not know the Frets magazine, but I think Cartlons effect was a guitar midi-synth - do you remember what was mentioned there ??

greetings from Germany
Gerhard

I believe there was more information in the article in Frets Magazine, but what I found on the page with the transcription for Her Favorite Song it states "On the album Carlton recorded his guitar using microphones and a Roland guitar synthesizer pickup simultaneously. The synthesizer was kept low in the mix, but a different pre-set sound was used on each verse to add a changing backdrop to the melody."

Larry has a 00-12 made by Mike McGuire who was at Valley Arts Guitar back then which I believe was EIR.

I found more info from Frets:

The guitar is picked up with two Sony 500 microphones.

A Roland GM70 synthesizer pickup is mounted on the soundboard, just forward of the bridge. According to McGuire it was a tough fit. "We shaved and sanded as much as we could off the bottom of it to get it to fit under the strings. Because of that pickup we are now using nickel-wound strings, Gibson Sonamatic light-gauge. They work out real well and improve the working of the EMG pickup, too."

Hi Chuck
thanks a lot for that information.... Back then, Roland was very innovativ with its guitar synths. Some years later I also bought one of them and still have one of the latest models today, but I don´t use it very often, although there are some great sounds and some interesting sound possibilities.

greetings from Germany
Gerhard
