SOLD: 1931 Larson Brothers Maurer Parlor Guitar
I didn't think I'd part with this, but here we go:
I'm selling my 1931 Maurer, made by the Larson Brothers of Chicago. Mahogany back and sides, spruce top, X-braced, all original, with ebony bridge and fretboard, with bar frets. Nut width is 1 7/8", lower bout is 13.5". It has been communicated to me by several people that there is visual evidence of an expertly done neck reset. It is in excellent-for-its age condition. There are signs of wear, small dings, chips, some flaking on the headstock, and a few minor cracks which have been or have remained stabilized, but the guitar is in fine condition for an 87 year old instrument. There is no appreciable pick wear--the top is very clean. It plays beautifully, and is a finger picker's dream--to me. When I first played it--before I knew I was going to buy it--I was frankly awed at how the notes seemed to leap out of the instrument. Sound almost levitates above the instrument. The tone is sweet and woody and alive. The mahogany has some beautiful if subtle chatoyance. It's very hard to find wood that looks like this today. The rosette and bindings are in excellent condition. This is a fine vintage instrument, and one that deserves to be in the hands of someone who will play it more than I do. It comes with a non-original hard shell case that is not a perfect fit, but it will suffice. I'd planned to have a new custom case made. Please visit this link for extensive, high quality photos detailing the entire guitar. I have tried to provide clear illustrations of every aspect of the instrument: https://lightroom.adobe.com/shares/1...0886e2ee9df89b I'm asking $2,995 net to me, insured UPS Ground shipping included, in CONUS. For potential faster transit times to the east coast to avoid it spending a weekend in a warehouse, extra cost will be buyer's responsibility. I will do my best to answer questions in a timely fashion. AGF sale references available upon request. Last edited by PieterK; 04-19-2020 at 09:30 AM. |

extraordinary guitar. How does it voice and volume compare to a similar vintage Martin 0-17 or 0-18?

I've only played one vintage 0-18. If I recall correctly it was from either 1945 or 1947. This was a few years ago. I'm just working off memory of my impressions of the Martin, but if that's worth anything, my feeling is that the Maurer has a bit more of that hard-to-describe pop, as if the notes were etched a little more sharply. I sometimes have this image in my mind of the notes as perfect pearls, floating in the air. It's probably a little woodier and drier sounding than the Martin. The Martin, being slightly larger I think, probably sounds a touch more blended, a touch more 'standard,' less small perhaps. Err...I don't know if that helps at all. Just my memories to work off of unfortunately as far as the Martin goes. |

I had a very experienced sound tech tell me my Larson Stahl was the only guitar he didn't have to balance on the board. This seems like a great price on a wonderful guitar. I'm trying to thin my stable or I would be a buyer on this.

Okay, back to square one!
After most of a year having to focus on other pressing things, let's put this back on the block. ...and introduce other metaphors having to do with 90 degree angles. |
