Default Recommendations, please: Used Acoustic under $800.

Hello, all:

Yes, I am a gear snob-my acoustics run in the $$$$. I am not familiar with the lower end market. I would like to find a nice 6-string for my son, preferably rosewood or mahogany body with a spruce top. Dreadnought or jumbo.

I know I’ll get a better bang for the buck with a used one.

So, what are the top choices? Guild? Yamaha? Epiphone?

Welcome to AGF. I would add Eastman to your brand selection. Their workmanship is very good and their dreads, in particular, are great. Here's a E10SS Slope Shoulder Dreadnought from Reverb...https://reverb.com/item/26863285-eas...ought-sunburst

You'd be hard to find a better deal than a Yamaha A series. The A3/AC3 are solid offerings.

Also, there are the Chinese makers that might fit that bill. I will say that the concert size Yamaha's are incredible, and I like them even more than that dreads.

Here are a few options:

Welcome? Oh, I see that I only have one post. Strange, as I have been a member since it was the Taylor forum. I used to post all the time, and have bought and sold here since the early 90s! I haven’t visited, though, in a very long time. I guess that’s why.

Yamaha L-series. The '16' models are all solid, Englemann spruce over either rosewood or mahogany (the latter now discontinued), and there are Yamaha's take on a dread (LL) and medium jumbo (LJ) models, as well as a smaller orchestra model (LS) in the lineup. They all have discrete passive pickups (no intrusive onboard knobs), and semi-rigid cases come as standard.
Excellent guitars; I have owned several iterations of both the LL and LJ types.

How about welcome back then??? FWIW AGF opened up shop as the Taylor Guitar Forum in 2000 so I'm not sure how you "bought and sold here since the early 90s."

Hi there and welcome. Cool you are getting your son a guitar and encouraging him to play. Here are a couple Epiphones that meet your criteria you posted. Add in a case and a little Fender acoustic guitar amps and brand new under 800 dollars

Or, while they are known as a uke company mostly, check out Kala's 2 acoustic electric guitars. I have one of there parlor guitars and two of there tenor guitars and can speak to the quality of the instruments. The gig bags they use are very solid and well made, not flimsy at all. In addition, when I got the parlor guitar and took it to my shop to get a set-up, the luthier said, this is perfectly set-up and does not need any adjustments.

I hope this gives some help. Let us know the outcome.

For inexpensive starter/beater guitars, we went to old guitar shops. My son picked out a 50’s Harmony h1215 archtop. $225 and his main acoustic player to this day. http://harmony.demont.net/guitars/H1215/30.htm

I’m a tad wary of taking my ‘46 J-45 to open mics (no one ever asks about it, btw ;-). So I just picked up a ‘66 Harmony Little Sovereign: https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...d.php?t=555645. Honduran mahogany, Adirondack top, Brazilian fingerboard and bridge, hide glue. Sounds and plays great with a chunky neck I love. With pickup installed still less $$ than entry level Taylors or Martins.

Options!

Guild F-150CE Jumbo Solid Rosewood. You can find them used for under 800 all day long. I use one for my gigging guitar.

If you're not absolutely locked into hog/RW, check out a brand-new Taylor 110e or 114e...

It would be an easy decision for me, used Larrivee D03. Easy to find also.
