Well, it must be the Matin Lifespan phos/bronz strings breaking in, but after about 3 hrs of playing things are getting really huge and solid and deep.
I'm going to really like this guitar! And, I've seen other complaints online about the tuners. I think the buttons are just a little too small and it makes them hard to tighten. It's not bad enough that I'll change them, but they really could be better. |

Not everything. The Martin tradition has been to alter the body when moving between 12 and 14 fretters. So with say a 14 fret guitar they went with a shortened upper bout to meet the neck at the 14th fret. Unlike Gibson though (which did not change the body shape) Martin did not alter the bracing pattern or bridge position.

A 12 fret Martin J, done the Martin way by extending the body would probably be the coolest thing ever, and it would probably be a dread killer!
But, if they would even do it, they would have to make a whole new body mold for just one guitar. It would cost a fortune. It would probably be less expensive to move the bridge and change all the bracing. I would definitely be way out of my price range. I was able to get my Jumbo because it was a relative bargain. I'd guess that guitar would cost over $10,000. Yikes! |

I kinda knew this was going to be a great guitar when I 1st read the specs.
I'm guessing it might be a very 'string-friendly' guitar too - by that I mean it will sound good with quite a few different types of strings. When you feel like doing a little string experimentation put Martin Retro Monels at the top of your list - I think they'd be perfect for this guitar. Nice one.

Thank you, everyone.
Bruce, Retro's are a good idea, but I'd be afraid to try them. It might blow the windows out of the house! Last edited by lowrider; 08-24-2019 at 10:07 AM. |

Martin does offer 12fret 0000/M through the custom shop, which is the same top as a jumbo. Just the deeper sides that are different. Did they tell you for certain they don’t do 12 fret jumbos? I agree on the retros. I love those strings on the 17dss. Congrats! |

Switching body size (as you did) whether 14 or 12 fret is not an expensive upcharge, as long as it’s an option (ie I don’t believe they offer to construct new shapes for custom orders even at an upcharge). But there are some sizes they won’t do. I once asked about the 0000/m size with the deep body feature. But they only offer 0000/m depth and j depth on that soundboard size. Deep body (4-5/8”) is no problem on 00 and 000 sizes though, which is weird. So I know they offer the 12fret 0000/m at a reasonable cost. No idea if they’d “supersize” it to jumbo or not.

Interesting coincidence, while we are discussing 12 frets I just started practicing a Mariachi opening for Bob Dylan's ''Billy 1''. It has me stretching to the 17th fret. So I'm glad this is not a 12 fret jumbo.
