Default Cutting The Mortise

I just got a load of pictures from Larry. I will post them in several posts.

These pics show Larry's method of cutting the mortise for the neck joint. This was done prior to the tenon pics in the post above.

The mortise jig is set in position atop the body.

A router is used atop the jig to rout the mortise.

And voila! One mortise.

Default MT Joint Hardware

Larry now installs the threaded hardware to allow the neck joint to be attached with bolts. These pics are from both guitars Larry is building at the moment. Mine is the neck with the thicker maple lams.

The holes in the heel are drilled to the proper size

The epoxy is prepared. The threaded insert can be seen on the end of the driver bit.

Epoxy applied to the outer threads, the insert is driven into the heel.

The serial number is stamped into the face of the tenon

The MT joints for two guitars are complete

Default Back Bracing: The Final Carve

In a previous installment, the back braces were not taken to their final dimensions. Here Larry finishes them off. I tapped the back yesterday prior to the final carve and it was sounding really nice. I imagine it was even better when Larry was done.

Tools of the trade. Note the brace ends are all taken down.

Now Larry takes off some height in the middle of the braces and profiles them a bit more. The ribbons are from the little plane, the dust from sandpaper and/or the sanding sticks.

And they're done. Sweet!

Default Closing The Box: Notching the Kerfing

With the back braces done, Larry prepares to close the box (i.e. gluing the back to the rims).

Larry has been hard at work the last couple of days.

Larry routs notches in the back kerfing to accept the brace ends

Nice fit!

The back, having been oversized, is trimmed closer to the final width.

She's ready to glue to the rims. The last bit of extra material will be trimmed off when the body is routed for binding. CORRECTION: The extra is routed off in a separate operation. See later installment.

And the last touch before closing the box...signing and dating the top.

Default Attaching The Back: Glue and Clamp

Larry starts by doing a dry run with the spool clamps. Before applying glue he gets the clamps set in position and to the correct width. This ensures he can get all the clamps set in place before the glue starts to set.

Note the spool clamps in a pile pell-mell.

All clamps in position

Larry now marks the position of each clamp.

The clamps are now removed and placed in order-each set to the proper width for its position on the body-so they can be quickly applied to the guitar once the back is glued.

The glue is applied, the back set in place, and the clamps replaced in order.

Thanks! So do I.

I got a call from Larry this morning asking if he could show a couple of my Tahoe Guitars to a prospective client. I drove the guitars over to his house. While there I snapped a few pics of work in progress. He was busy notching the kerfing on the in-progress Adi/Mahogany dread being built with mine, and asked me to remove the clamps from the body of my guitar. I did so and got to hear the first taps on the closed box.

The top taps deeply and broadly (a lot of complexity). The back with the top muted is a bit more bell like. Overall the box is very resonant and musical. We cranked the stereo to feel how the box responded to the music. It was vibrating all over. I could feel the sound of the snare drum in the sides, and certain notes absolutely "lit up" the box. Very responsive, it seems.

Clamps off

The completed box

Larry then corrected me on something...he trims off the excess material on the back before routing for binding. He demonstrated...

I had to shoot a brief video...a bit of silliness ensued.

Default Fretboard Binding

Here are the latest updates on my Tahoe Guitars BC Lutz/Madi 00-14.

Here is an interesting little sequence showing Larry making a jig to purfle some binding. Originally we were going to go with ebony binding on the ebony FB. I made this decision because I felt the curly mahogany binding would blend too much into the mahogany neck. However, after discussing it with Larry, we decided a BWB purfle on the curly mahog binding would create enough visual offset. Larry then had to decide how to glue a tiny surface to another tiny surface. This was his solution...

The cast of characters

Building a jig. The tape is so the glue squeezeout doesn't contact the wood jig.

Here you can see the similarity in hue between the neck and the binding. It's hard to see, but the BWB purfle is on the binding here. The binding will be oriented so the purfle is against the neck.

Default Rough Neck Carve

The work on shaping the neck begins! Larry uses his bandsaw to cut the neck closer to final dimensions, including the full-width volute. We are going with a slightly curved top line of the head. Also Larry is carving the cheeks into the heel.

The cheeks of the heel

The top curve on the head laid out.

The top curve is cut

Larry trims down the neck(s), leaving extra meat for the volute

Default Neck Layout

Larry does a bit more work on laying out and cutting the neck prior to the final shaping. Note the shot of the purfled binding against the mahogany neck.

Default Purfled Binding Mock Up

Larry just sent me some pics of a mock up of the purfled binding against the neck. I think it looks really good. Amazing what a little .040 BWB can do for you...

Larry's hand, mocking it up and slapping it down.

Default Fretboard Binding

In this sequence, Larry glues the FB binding to the fretboard using a simple little jig and some wood wedges.

Default Truss Rod Slot

Larry slots the neck for the truss rod.

The neck and the slotting jig

The platform of the jig is positioned

Once positioned, the platform is locked down. The neck tenon is bolted to the jig as well.

The router is in position

A test cut is made

The router is run down the length of the neck. Lots of shavings!

A slot is born

Two slotted necks...

...and a whole lot of wood dust!

Looking great! I really like the look of the maple neck stripes and one of my favorite body sizes. Nice to see a Tahoe build coming together.

Thanks, JR!. Yes, a great body size...a "snuggly OM".
