Default Prairie State Mini-Jumbo

Well, I just had to do it...a smaller jumbo. This one will be for me with a 16" lower bout, 17" box length and a 22.785" scale. I'll try to build it for .054-.013" strings or heavier, and try to make the action very low to ease the strain on my left hand. Hopefully, I will be able to make the long A without too much pain.
Here's the back from Brazilian and compared to the 18" jumbo.

Hans, it's a good thing you are fast at building, because your ideas seem to generate at an awfully fast rate. Beautiful set of Brazilian. I'd imagine it's going to be a red spruce top. What are you going to do for bracing on this one?

Chuck, sometimes I feel I'm faster at coming up with ideas than the time to build them. This is a special case though as I am beginning to realize that if I don't do something, I may not be able to play anymore. So, I'm hoping a very short scale will help.
Yea, I'm doing red spruce and if it goes well, I may make a red spruce/white oak later. I have ANOTHER new purfling that I'm working on. As far as bracing, it will be pretty much like the big one, and the instrument will pretty much look the same except for no back strip.
Chaz, will do. I like the freedom to do what I like.

Here's the fingerboard cut and slotted by hand...that was a tedious job. Might have to buy one of those miter saw/box slotters if I do it again. Left to right, 22.875, 24.625, 25.34 and 26.22". Long A's are great!

Here's the back braced and ready to clean up.

Here's some more photos...

Top bracing laid up. Trying some wenge lam with red spruce...

Rosette is much the same as it's big brother...

Peghead with slight shape change. Put in a little recurve right at the top before the "moustache"...

Also trimmed the side with a black/ivoroid stripe...

Neck ready to shape. Still need to bind the fingerboard and glue it on, but have to cut the dovetail first.

Top braced, very similar to the larger one, but downscaled some...

Really cool, Haans. I really like it's big brother, so I'll be watching this build with great interest.

Chris.

Thank you, Chris.
I'm making the mould for the ribs (just hate doing moulds) now, and trying to keep the dust down...it's a mess though. Have the basic mould done and still have to make the bending form and spreaders. It's still quite a large box!

Hans, I realized that it's the short box length (e.g., my jumbo Guilds have 17" lower bouts are 20.5" long at the box) that makes the bouts on your mini-jumbo appear so exaggerated (to my eye). It's a neat optical illusion, as a 16" bout should be very comfortable to play.

Thanks for keeping us posted, as always.

That's about it Chaz...I often wonder if Larsons just took a 12-14" mould and added a center section block at the top and bottom just to make it wider...but the waist is pretty pinched too.

Finally got the mould built, bending forms and spreaders. Here's the mould, first BRW side bent and set into mould while the other side is bent.

Blocks, kerfing glued onto ribs, radius sanded into back edge, and back glue on...

I'll see if I can get the top on today, and then I get to see what we have tonewise...

Haans, judging by your output of late, you should have "retired" years ago. Your work is inspired - and inspiring!

Thank you Pete. I wish I had them all done, and there's a lot left to do on them, but I feel I have to get this one done since I haven't been playing much at all. Pretty hard to look at your own instruments and not be able to play them...
Here's yesterday's work...

Top cylindrical radius sanded into ribs...

Last peek inside before buttoning up. CF tone tubes added to the ribs and everything sanded and buffed...

Top glued on...

At this point I am very pleased with how it taps out, top stiffness seems about right, and I will proceed to do a little sanding in my "special areas" before binding.
