Taran guitar, beautiful Claro walnut headed for B.I. G. (er)
I am pleased to start this build thread showing the masterful work of Rory Dowling of Taran guitars. This Tirga Mohr (pronounced ‘Chigora Mor') will be presented at B.I.G. (er) 2020 and I am proud of that fact. You can find a few threads regarding Taran guitars specifically a wonderful thread by Rory himself regarding work he did with Martin Simpson. This guitar will be modeled after that build! Rory (and hopefully his better half) will be coming to Texas this spring and any who can come will do themselves a favor as his guitars are like no others. I hope some of this build thread will show that. He is a very thoughtful builder with innovation in mind to produce to his ears, the best guitar he can possibly make.
Please enjoy this build and hopefully Rory will drop by on occasion. First the woods! The back is some beautiful Claro walnut and the top a wonderful sinker curly redwood! ataran build woods.jpg ataran build woods 1.jpg ataran build back in mold.jpg

For all that I've been enjoying your Nautilox build thread, I'll be watching this with added interest as it's closer to home and heart. Thanks for sharing.
Looks like it's off to a great start with those woods. |

Rory search a long time to find a great set of Claro Walnut for me. If I remember correctly this set came from Oregon, shipped to Scotland, made into a guitar and shipped to Texas. That is quite a journey!

So one of the very unique things with Taran guitars is he builds them with quite an arched back. To do this, the back braces have to be filed just enough to allow them to take their bends and not break, but also thin enough to not inhibit vibration of the back as this is an active back. Here Rory is starting that process using a jig to help him judge this delicate process.

Wow!
Tom, this looks to be awesome! Have never played a Taran guitar before, but the concepts Rory is using seem sound and unique.
Walnut and redwood should make for a wonderful combo--looking forward to seeing and playing this beauty! So who's living the dream now, brother?

So once the braces are planed to Rory's liking, they are glued to the arched back as normal with go bars...

In this pic you see the final result of his work. It also allows you to get a feel for the degree of curvature of the back. ataran guitar compression braces arc.jpg ataran guitar compression braces in place.jpg ataran guitar compression bracing close up.jpg

There is an interesting story behind the Redwood Rory is using. I own a sister set that came from the same supplier. Not only is it "Sinker", but has just the right amount of curl to be gorgeous without having structural issues. A lot of curly redwood is just not structurally sound for me.
Here is the site of the company that pulled this log from the water. When I say "company", back when it was pulled, it was just a couple of guys in a skiff. Great read. http://www.redwoodsalvagesales.com/t...vage-story.htm The other cool thing is the Claro Walnut most likely came from Northern California or Southern Oregon, not too far from where the Redwood came from. |

Thank you for that link, I knew where the wood was purchased from, but not its backstory, that was a really cool read! Thank you for posting it.

Congratulations Tom! That looks gorgeous!
I know I am often quoted as only playing Spruce top guitars (for admittedly good reason) I do have a soft spot for walnut and redwood as a combo and I know Rory will do a wonderful job as ever. I'm looking forward to see the build progress almost as much as you are! M
