What a songwriter..
Just thought I would post this here at Christmas time - I love Jon Randall - in my opinion the finest tenor voice in country music and a fantastic player and songwriter to boot.
This is a song that’s never been on any of his releases but is my favourite by far - so emotional and so beautifully performed. So for those of you that haven’t heard Jon Randall, and even for those that have - I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.. https://youtu.be/y2uY2oZJM9E

Hadn't heard of him. Thanks.
That particular song sounds Texas troubadour. Like Townes if he'd been sweet and lyrical. |

I was fortunate enough to have Jon as my instructor in songwriting school at RockyGrass Academy a few years ago. Outstanding musician and super-nice, down-to-Earth kinda guy. He wrote Whiskey Lullaby, a big hit for Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss, and one of my favorite country ballads.

I had not heard of him before but like his playing and voice. The song I found very melancholy.

Yes he can sing and play. But that is what I call sloppy lyrics. Cliches, ads nothing personal...
English isn't even my native language but I still hear how awful the lyrics are. And yes, I could write better in english. At 1,53 I couldn't take anymore and turned of. That's when he mentions "infront of the dairy queen" the first time. |

song/story before commenting. I for one enjoy songs that invoke emotion. Yes it was purposely written to do just that. And i think it was written well. Country music is all about things ordinary people do in everyday life. Trials and tribulations. Correct english is best left to school teachers. The song caught me when he came home in a box. My wifes mother was in love with a man, before her father ,who was killed in WW2. I think this song would have been very "personal" to her. I call them "no dry eye songs" Thanks for sharing. Jon Randall's not only a great songwriter and performer, he's also one of Nashville's top producers. Dirks Bentley and Miranda Lambert garnered a Grammy nomination in 2010 with their recording of the Verlon Thompson song 'Bad Angel' which Jon produced.

Well I'd be happy to listen to some of your "better" songwriting. Feel free to post some in the Show And Tell subforum here at the AGF. I'm sure others are interested as well. I'll even post some honest and critical feedback.

I had heard of Jon Randall but actually just forgot to check him out. Thanks for posting.
I can imagine that it might be hard for people from another country and/or cultural background to relate to this kind of slice-of-life music/lyrics. I love Cheryl Wheeler and I have a friend who cannot relate to her music/lyrics at all. So not bad or good, just what speaks to you or not. Best, Jayne |
