I think Rodriguez is the brand that Fender is importing from Spain. I've seen a couple, and they were very nice, with a rich tone and good fit and finish.
If you're not in a hurry and don't mind buying used, look for a Guild "Mark" series classical. Guild made these gems from the early 60s through the early 80s, and they're excellent, all solid wood guitars. Better still, they don't seem to have a lot of collector's value, so you can usually pick one up for $500 or less. The series went from Mark I (all mahogany, 1960s only) through Mark IV. The II, III and IV had spruce or cedar tops, and back/sides of mahogany or rosewood. I think there's a Mark IV on ebay right now.

Personally I could go for a DDSM Nylon coming out this september with the fall ltds. If you look closely you will notice the neck joining the body at the fourteenth fret. Gotta love that.

I think Hill and Cervantes come to mind as pioneers of quality solid wood nylon string guitars at “mid price”. Kinda like Taylor was a short ways back. Unless you’rr a serious concert guitarst with a $5000 classical guitar, most players really don’t know what it’s like to play a really nice solid wood classical. These companies are changing that. Unfortunately “mid price” in classical guitars is still around $1500 to $2000. I got my Hill Madrid ( a faithful, solid wood copy of a 60’s Ramirez ) for $1700, ( sounds truly three dimensional and huge ) but you se them on Ebay from time to time for less.

Jefferson--go to Acoustic Guitar's Classical Corner and post your question over there.
http://www.acousticguitar.com/ubbcgi/Ultimate.cgi (Scroll down just a little and you'd see it.) The word there is Lucida Artista Concerto (about $500) or the Lucida Artista Picado (cheaper). Both are all solid wood and are quite popular, and you can ask there for directions to the cheapest prices. They're made in Spain. Their only weak point is their tuners--most users replace them with a set of Gotohs. |
