Thanks for responding Dane. Great collection (if I may use that word). Why do you consider the J15 a quirkly guitar? I'm unfamiliar with that model.

I've got a few old Taylors (see signature). I've considered selling off the 815 which has gold Schaller tuners with ebony buttons, each with a nice pearl snowflake inlay, because I find myself playing my smaller six strings when not playing the 855; but each time I pull out that old 815 and hit a few chords, I say "nah". Someday I'm going to have to thin the herd but it's hard to do.

My 410 is from 1992 (Santee factory). I purchased it used in 1996 for $400 -- my first "real" guitar. This is the last guitar I would ever think to sell.

Well, it's unlike other things they've done. It has a Jumbo body with a cutaway, an oval soundhole, pearl oval fret markers and a highly-stylized pickguard. It's not clear how many were made, probably about 50 or so, but you just don't see them that often.

Thanks, guys. It was the first good guitar I bought, and there was more than a hint of risk since the brand was still new, but the store salesman spoke well of it. I had long been promsing myself a Martin, and the store had a J-28 that I liked as much, but this 615 one was a lot less expensive. I also looked at a new 615, but this one had more mojo.

2) How many people are the original owners of a 20 year old Taylor?

Sometimes it's easy to forget that back in the '70s and '80s Taylor was just entering the market and beginning to make strides. I've never played a Taylor that's pre-2000 (at least I don't think I have).
Pick me! Pick me! (1993 Taylor 410, sorry, no pictures yet.)

That's a Baggs M1 in the soundhole, with its cap painted black. The neck on this guitar is extremely slim, with a soft V shape. I have yet to play another that feels quite like it.

Years ago I tried to describe this very guitar to my wife (then not even a girlfriend) after I played it at Goose Acres in east Cleveland. (I mention this because someone mentioned Woodsy's in Kent). I told her it sounded like the harps of Heaven and she later went there to buy it for me but couldn't tell Pete what the model number was, and he didn't even remember who I was in spite of the fact that I had been in there many times for other purchases.

She ended up buying me a 410 similar to the one KHH is talking about in this thread, which is why she is now my wife. Any woman who will feed your GAS like that is wife material.

I have a 1999 514ce, so also a bit young, but anyway, my guitar has just got more and more mellow over the years (Cedar over Mahogany) and I wouldn't swop it for anything :-) even though its way pre ES system and he original Fishman blender is now giving some odd error and prob needs replacing. Fishman do make a newer version :-) I guess it depends how it was looked after where it went.
But a well looked after solid wood instrument should have no problem with 20 years :-)

I owned this exceptionally clean 1996 Taylor 422 Quilted Maple Grand Concert for several years.
Couldn't bond with it and finally traded it 2 months ago.

p.s. Love that 615!

I've got a 1993 410. Not the original owner by any means, and I'm actually trying to sell it at the moment: http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...d.php?t=424261

I'm the original owner of a '96 420 with OEM "pink poodle" case (TMK there was a very brief period - maybe a month or two at most - when they were shipped with the upscale cases) that looks like it was made from the same batch of maple as yours, as well as a '99 415 - best necks I've ever played on any acoustic (particularly the 420), and small wonder those pre-NT Taylors are garnering some long-overdue collector interest...

I have a '95 Taylor 612 Cotten Special. It was my first good guitar, has traveled all over the states, and still sounds and looks amazing. When other fine guitars have come and gone, this one is still special.

Two of my favorite guitars.....a '91 510, and a '96 710 Brazilian. I got both used; the 510 is my first Taylor purchased in '99. The 710 was bought in '09. They are both very nice guitars.
