Watched the latest episode last night, "Memento Mori" and think it was the best so far, and I have now put SNW at the top of my list of "new" Star Treks. Had the dread and terror of a monster movie without ever showing the monsters! Great story. Really liking almost all of the characters, new and revisited.

I let it go, because obviously they modernized it, but robots drones that repair the ship, transportation from anywhere on the ship, not just the transporter room, the sporedrive? All Kirk had was warp drive and a bunch of flashing lights on boxes on the bridge lol!

And, the ship, Kirk was flying around in a Yugo compared to the ship in Voyager or SNW haha! The Federation of Planets must have had a major budget cut!

Voyager was sort of concurrent with Next Generation and DS9, it wasn’t a prequel to OS.

I'm going to watch it again. Great stuff. Star Trek has returned!

Yes, I know, I misspoke in that post, I meant Discovery, not Voyager. I corrected it later, but I will edit that now.

My point being, not getting lost in too many details is that both Discovery and SNW are prequels and it is tough for my mind to go there with all the technology and fancy ships in the new series. Heck their quarters look like fancy LA apartments.

Not a big deal, but I just think they could have thought about that a little more.

I think doing vintage effects and sets would have been great for old time, hard core Star Trek fans like us, but that may not have attracted new fans.

I don't get the spore drive thing in Discovery though. You can't have new tech that TOS didn't have if the timeline is prior to TOS.

I'm a huge Trek fan from day 1 so I usually stay out of conversations.
But here is a quick timeline that may be helpful.

Star Trek: Enterprise (2151-2161)
Star Trek Discovery (2255)
Star Trek TOS (2265-2269)
Star Trek: The Animated Series (2269-2270)
Original Star Trek movies (2273-2293)
Star Trek: The Next Generation TNG (2364-2370)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (2369-2375)
Star Trek: Voyager (2371-2378)

Enterprise got the technology right I think without doing the "cardboard and tape" look of the Original Series.

Still digging 'Strange New Worlds'. One of the few streaming show where I don't skip past the intro.

So, I got to thinking about giving 'Discovery' another look see (I bailed after season 1).

After about 2 1/2 episodes into season 2, I just don't think I can watch anymore of that.....

My main problem with Discovery is I don't like the main character. Actually didn't like a lot of the characters. Kinda makes it hard to like the show...

Yes, they painted themselves into a corner with the spore drive - but then relied on the crutch of rogue AIs/Borg prequel and time travel as an escape vector. The writing was very sloppy, which is why I strongly feel that Kurtzman needs to go. He does not understand the basic premise of Star Trek and up until SNW has basically been treating it like any other dystopian scifi franchise.

There's a series of youtube videos that describes the split between
Paramount and NBC/Universal and how the Star Trek franchise
was disrupted by it. The new Paramount stuff had to be a certain
percentage "different" from TOS (The Old Stuff). With the Chris Pine
movies they did a pretty good job of it, I liked all of them.

I had great expectations for this new merger of Paramount and NBC,
but none of the rest of this new stuff has been worth a dime in my opinion,
other than the first season of Picard.

EDIT: this bit from the Star Trek wiki page does a better job
than my memory ...
