Default Paragon MJ Macassar Ebony / Redwood build thread

Hi all. We settled on the specs a couple of months ago, and it's beginning to take shape a bit at at time. We hope to have this one finished in time for Healdsburg.

Rob picked up this set of MacEb about a year ago..

First intention was an MJ, then a 12 string, and I finally settled on a baritone, and we think this set's going to make a killer bari.

Sides bent.. Yep, Florentine cut.

And the back...

J "9t" TC,

I "commit" to a trip to LR prior to your coming to OK in the fall (date not yet set) for the jam!!!

And I think after mid-August would be best, don't you? With bari in hand?

I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing a National Reso and an LKSM as well!

Don't you love the red grain in this back and side set? The set of redwood top has been curing at the wood bin for 22 years.. I haven't seen it yet, but a color to set off the mac/eb and long straight grain and tone to voice that bari is what I'm anticipating!!

Is "in transit" from the wood supply guy. We looked at quite a few options but ended up with his recommendation on this 22 year old set... I'll post a pic when I get one.

"Killer old Redwood" is the term we're using. Maybe that's just a *bit* hopeful !! But I trust Rob's judgement and he trusts this guy (who I don't know).

We considered sinker but couldn't get a read on how that would benefit the tones Rob thought we could get out of the Mac Eb, and it therefore became just a visual decision. I love Rebecca's Macassar Ebony and sinker Redwood Taylor, but this will be a little less "loud" visually from the front and still - again hopefully - retain that bell tone we're after.

More as it progresses... I'm enjoying this!

That's a beautiful set of MacEb.... I haven't heard a Bari yet, but I don't think I can get to LR to hear this one. Maybe I can get to Healdsburg (not looking good for that, but it looks better than getting to LR). Congrats Phil!

You're in very good hands with Rob. My 12 string and matching jumbo are absolutely phenomenal guitars. Congrats and keep the pictures coming

A delay here and there... Seems like the time whisked by! I didn't mean to frustrate anyone, but did expect some progress so I thought I'd raise the thread up again.

It's really going to be a stunning guitar. There have been some discussions along the way, in the silent spaces, with the binding and bevel. As Rob has considered and compared what will bring out the grain in that raucous back and side set, adding to the emphasis but without detracting, so although I don't have any pictures yet I'll look forward to showing what he's come up with when I do.

Cheers!

rr/Phil

Well, some things--like fine guitars--are worth the wait.
I'm sure Rob appreciates your patience.

And by the way, that is some really attractive ebony.

Thanks Steve - yeah, that set really is nice! And I agree... fine guitars are worth the wait! I've been enjoying watching your build thread, too, by the way!
