I think the best dread with a 1 13/16 nut width is the Collings DS, either DS1 or DS2. The DS 1 has Sitka spruce top with mahogany back and sides while the DS 2 has Sitka spruce top with rosewood back and sides. They are not that easy to find, so if you find one grab it!

This has been an educating WTB thread - sorry for the confusion guys, I never thought Collings were considered “Modern” since they’re based on Martins and some Gibson designs....and OMs and 000’s weren’t small body’s. Have to pass on anything resembling Martin or Gibson heritage....or anything less than 15.5” lower bout (as stated in the OP) such as a OM or 000....

Ive been searching every where I can think for a -000 or GA size 1 13/16 and have not been able to find one for under $3,000 for me thats pushing it.. Well I did find one but its got traditional tone. I found a lot of 0 and 00 size and some more expensive. Of course a lot of builders will do that custom but the wait is so hard and often expensive. Then you dont know what it will sound like unless its a well known brand and if so its unaffordable.

Must say I'm surprised at how rare > 1 3/4" modern fingerstyle instruments are... would assume at least 1/3 of the builds out there would be, esp. anything commissioned in the last 10 years - maybe it's the string spacing that's the issue as 2 1/4 seems pretty standard. Still, it seems like anyone with larger hands would spec it out at 1 13/16...7/8 -> 2 5/16...3/8.

It’s surprising to me too, I can manage with a 2 1/4 spacing but it’s not ideal...I’ve been spoiled by the 2 5/16 spacing on my Beneteau. Just makes life so much easier for my right hand.

Hahaha get outta here John!

Really guys, I hate to sound like I have anything against older guitars, or Martin style guitar’s for that matter, I just don’t find them inspiring for my own tunes. Do I love to hear them on my favorite records though...? Absolutely!

Interesting, I find 2 5/16 harder than 2 1/4. Maybe my hands are smaller. I dont like 2 1/8 for fingerpicking but its fine for rhythm with a pick.

I think 2 1/4 is better for flatpicking, but 2 5/16 lets my hand “unfold” (for lack of better words) just a bit more which I greatly prefer to having to clinch my fingers together. It’s especially helpful for letting open string melodies ring out when the string space gradually increases more than say a 1 13/16 spreading to just a 2 1/4 bridge...that feels odd to me, personally.

Anyways, still hunting. Thanks everyone for the kind offers!
