Default RIP David McCallum

https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/dav...le-1235734772/

I was just watching him on old episodes of NCIS last night - loved him as the ME "Ducky". As a kid I remember him from The Man From UNCLE series. Sad news.

I played golf with him at Westlake Village golf course, circa 1982. A gentleman, very intelligent, witty, a pleasure to walk 18 holes with. I grew up watching him on TV.

ALWAYS enjoyed his character on NCIS - a little to young to remember the UNCLE series very well.

His son Val plays with Jackson Browne

NCIS is on the wrong side of my TV watching cutoff date.

This, on the other hand,

“The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” was a hit on TV when I was ten or so. We used to play Man From UNCLE and I always got to be Ilya Kuryakin because I was the only towheaded boy on the block.

Here’s a true story: in 1992 I was part of a cultural exchange from Anchorage, Alaska to our sister city in the Russian Far East, Magadan. One of our local interpreters introduced himself as Ilya something, and he asked me: “You know this name ‘Ilya’?”

And I said “Oh, sure, like Ilya Kuryakin.” He looked puzzled and said: “Who is this Ilya Kuryakin?” So I explained to him about the TV show and how Ilya was one of the heroes.

That was the last time I dealt with him myself, but some of the other people on exchange trip told me that he was introducing himself as “Ilya, like Ilya Kuryakin!”

Anyway, we have David MacCallum to thank for a lot. He was a boyhood hero of mine, and I’m delighted that he had as long a career as he did.

THAT big tall guy is his son?

I had no idea! He's a really interesting guitar player.

I was also watching the old NCIS reruns last night. But didn't realize until the end of the episode that he had passed. Always liked him...sad news indeed. Rest well David!

He was a teen idol at the time. I always think of him as being Russian even though I know better.

May he rest in peace

I remember him well as Ilya - and also as Steel, in Sapphire and Steel, a TV series starring him and the lovely Joanna Lumley as a pair of intergalactic detectives investigating attempts to break the space-time barrier.

The sets and effects can look a little hokey after 40-plus years, but there are some genuinely interesting story lines to follow, if you like that sort of sci-fi. All 4 seasons are available on FreeVee.

One of the first shows that grabbed my attention as a little kid was "Outer Limits". It's dated now, but back then it was captivating. Well written.
He had a great performance in one of the episodes, entitled "The Outer Limits of Human Evolution".

But no question, there is only one Ilya Kuryakin.

"The Sixth Finger" makes me think of Flowers for Algernon.

David was also in the episode "The Forms of Things Unknown."

His boss was Mr. Waverly. Coincidence? I think not...

Hi Gromitspapa,
You're right. The episode I had in mind was indeed called "The Sixth Finger".
Thanks for the correction.

And I thought it was his only one. I'll have to check out "The Forms of Things Unknown."
(I got the whole series on Blue Ray DVD a few years ago.)
