New Tellier custom baritone being commissioned after B.I.G.
First post in a few years
 Love all these guys that come out to Tom's house and hang out for a weekend every year, that has really been a huge blessing to me.Guys, I don't go to B.I.G. to seriously buy a guitar, as I have been recovering and sober for a few years now! well I went into relapse all because of a baritone at the show that Fred Tellier built. It was a bit tricky to handle at 28 inch scale length, but I was surprised how well it fit some of the tunes I play/arrange....So after a few swigs of whisky and a really fun weekend, what the hell I'm gonna have him build me one. Here is where I'm at: 27 inch scale length a 16th over 1.75 setup for the big strings on that guitar at the show, lowest used tuning at B (that thing could handle A no problem) Without wanting to get too carried away, my bias on a custom guitar would be something a bit on the gnarly side when it comes to wood. I love sleepers or otherwise imperfect options (think of knots, bearclaw, streaky tops, less glossy finishes, burl wood etc). That said, I don't want to depart much from the formula I liked on that guitar: euro spruce on bubinga (i think?). I'm leaning towards either that cousin slab to the baritone at the show, or a Koa or Tasmanian blackwood that Fred has on hand. He also has a really cool torrified Sitka that looks good, and some nice bear claw. Without getting too far down the rabbit hole, should I be biased towards the wood options (and try to balance the lower register with "brighter" choices, etc... or just go with what looks great, Fred likes, and see how it turns out.... I'll put some pics up later for some of my options

That Baritone was awesome and I can see why you did this. Don't be mad at yourself, it was a fine choice. I was amazed how good all of Fred's guitars were. Based on that, I would just go for wood you like that is cool and let Fred handle the rest.

Yes!
Fred's Baritones are incredible... And so fun to play. I played the one at BIG for about 2 hours total...

Don't tell Fred, but he has Koa that is unobtainable for anything less than a fortune these days. I would go that route! Congrats on your commission!

Great to see a baritone thread starting! I'm looking forward to more posts.
I can't comment on the koa vs mahogany question, except to say that I'd look at walnut too (like Dustin Furlow's recent baritone build thread).

Now I'm mulling over the idea of an eight string baritone, doubling the G and D strings ( I guess much lower since it's in baritone Zone).
Going to see what Fred thinks about providing two different nuts and saddles to accommodate either option. If I'm pretty much only doing fingerstyle, I wonder if this would be a value add or a distraction. Opinions welcome!

My Kostal OMC is German spruce over koa so I think you made an excellent choice!
I sat in on the demo of Fred’s baritone at BIG and I’m kicking myself that I did not get around to playing it. But then again maybe it would have gotten me in trouble! Congrats on the new build. Quote:

Actually work has just begun, as 2 projects have their woodwork complete and ready for me to apply finish so the build can begin. Top and back are joined and sanded to thickness and side bending will be this week.
