Apparently he was diagnosed with skin cancer 4 years ago and then he developed lymphoma per TMZ. Sad.

I’m hearing many of you refer to him as a brilliant songwriter. Other than Come Monday I’m not familiar with anything other than his silly songs (Fins, Cheeseburger, Margaritaville, etc). I’d love to check out some of the brilliant stuff. Anyone mind sharing a short list of the good ones?

I saw Buffett maybe 5 or 6 times in concert. His concerts were not just concerts, but EVENTS that needed to be experienced to understand. First Lightfoot, and now Buffett. What a crappy year for music! RIP Mr. Buffett!

Dinner tonight;
Cheeseburger and fries for Jimmy! I only saw him twice, at the Garden State Art Center, and at Gussman Hall in downtown Miami. Great time both times. Gussman Hall was where some of the album ''You should have been there was recored a year or two before.

Todd, thanks for providing that "set list" for Stratcat77. There are so many deep cuts that casual Buffett listeners have likely never heard we could continue to add to that all night long. That's partly what saddens me today. I think Buffett was often taken lightly due to the party along aspect, but there is a body of work in all of those albums that defies that misconception.

I am one of those who thought Jimmy Buffet was a talented songwriter. I wasn't a fan of his more popular songs. As has been noted "He Went To Paris", "The Captain and the Kid" and several others gave a window into the depths of his thought. His music influenced several of my own compositions. I tried very hard not to copy subjects and sounds and I don't know if I succeeded. His music is also a primary reason that I am now a "beach bum". I think that is what I was meant to be.

A little-known fact about Jimmy.... In Chicago, John Prine's very best friend was my guitar hero Steve Goodman, who wrote "The City of New Orleans" (no, Arlo didn't write it). One of GOODMAN'S best friends was Jimmy Buffett. One of Goodman's songs, "Banana Republics," became part of his regular set list. In the early years, when Jimmy came to Chicago, he was so broke that he didn't have two nickels to rub together. Goodman let him sleep on his couch. When Goodman died of leukemia in 1984 at the young age of 36, it destroyed JB. For years he couldn't even mention Steve's name. Irony of ironies: Had Goodman lived, he could easily have become JB's bandleader, music director and, if he wanted to, lead guitar player. Goodman would have ended up a multi-millionaire. I believe I'm correct in saying (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong) that most of those honors over the last few decades fell to Mac McAnlly. (One final note.
