Paradoxically --- "drive you crazy" kind of fits the bill doesn't it ?

Some don't like my saying. "This is my Taylor Killer."
GPCPA1.jpg

Also, the budget buyers saying, My $500. guitar is just as good as your $5000. guitar.

Really? ya think?

That's like saying a Celica is just as good as a Maserati.

If you've never actually owned one. You don't know.

“Piano-like”
“Sounds like a choir of angels…”

Both utter and complete over-romanticised nonsense - a guitar sounds like a guitar, nothing more and nothing less. And, FWIW, there isn’t a single person alive on this Earth who knows what a ‘choir of angels’ sounds like.

Fingerstyle. So how come there is no plectrum style.

Also its a "cannon". Might be applicable if you are talking about a Les Paul plugged into a Marshall stack.

And yeah, anything that uses a food analogy. The best I have run across thus far though remains "chocolatey".

None of the aforementioned terms overly bother me, but I do question “minty.” There is no minty. It’s either mint or it’s not. And if it is it better have hang tags, plastic over the pick guard and that “new” smell wafting from the sound hole.

“Electric-acoustic,” or the even worse “electro-acoustic.”

I agree and ditto for guitar picks. The budget buyers say my $1 pick is just as good as your $40 [insert name e.g. Charmed Life, BlueChip or Apollo] pick. I don't think so.

"minty" is the most obnoxious term.

Somehow, referring to an acoustic guitar as an “axe” annoys me. I think that should only be used with electric guitars.

“Hog”, instead of mahogany. You don’t abbreviate any of the other types of wood.

Haha! Agree with most, although I WILL use EIR and Hog, and I will use Adi or sitka.

Of course not all Red spruce is Adi., but it doesn't matter much.

"Mad-rose"
means Madagascar which I will not touch. BRW is Brazilian which I would also not buy now.

Calling European spruce "German" is so passé, this came about as most Picea Abies was shipped out of German ports I believe. Spruce trees don't seem to worry much about which country humans call where they grow.

Picks is a misnomer as we don't "pick" we draw the "plectrum" across the string.

Scratch-plate is more accurate than "pick-guard" as you don't hit the top with a pick unless you are wildly amateurish and inaccurate - but we do mark the top in that area with the trailing fingertips/fingernails.

New offers:

"Vintage" : is meaningless unless preceded or or suffixed with a year or other specific period, e.g., "50s". that's Ok.

"Select" (as in "select spruce top") simply means the raw top from the "top of the pile" i.e. whichever comes to hand.

Adverts claiming that guitars are "still handmade" like they used to be (from high volume builders) No they aren't, so don't try to fool us!

Slope dread. (we've been here before!)
Martin designed two styles of dreadnought - the 12 fret (the best!!!!) and the 14 fret rhythm style - They are preceded by a "D" - D18/28 etc.

Gibson style bodies such as J35/45/AJ etc are "JUMBOS" (hence the "J" -geddit?) They are NOT Dreads!

Larger Gibson style acoustics are Super Jumbos - as in SJ200.

Archtops are acoustic guitars, not electrics.

Electric guitars that look like archtops but have one or more pick-ups screwed to the top (and the 4x4 fencepost underneath), are electrics.

Semi-acoustic ?? Hollow body? Semi-acoustic? Wha?

oh, and by the way, While I know the original Spanish word Capodastro, I'll call my capos "kay-poes" if I want.

So there!

Nurse? my pills!

It's funny - I hadn't heard many of these descriptions used for guitars before I started reading forums, and most of them I had only heard used on this one. That said, every forum has its slang.. Maybe I'm just easily irritated. Anyway, glad to know others here are irritated by some of these descriptors as well.

One that bothers me when reading ads online- and worse, on music store websites, is when the ad begins "Offered for sale is.." Of course, it's being offered for sale - that's why I'm reading the ad!

I know what you mean but having been a full time guitar tech/builder for almost a decade, I'm constantly amazed at how many cheap guitars sound great and how many $5000 guitars don't. I mean, the odds are in your favor that a brand new $5000 guitar will sound better than a brand new $500 guitar but at this point, with so many so/so custom builders and lots of pretty mediocre "vintage" guitars hitting the $5000 range coupled with some very well made affordable imports, it's just no longer a given that an expensive guitar will out preform a cheap one.
