The backset is now joined and we now need to decide how to locate the sapwood within the 00 size body pattern. The set is beautifully quartersawn and the brown heartwood is visually rich with black veining with contrasting sapwood.
![]() John suggested we slide the pattern a bit to have the sapwood resolve to a point about a 1/2” from the heel (right) vs. ending at the back purflings (left). This will create an area of contrast and visual tension once the body is bound in contrasting Gaboon Ebony binding with a Maple purfling. ![]()

That wood is looking truly beautiful! Circas are just gorgeous instruments.

"...contrast and visual tension..."
I like that!

![]() It was a special set that John has had for 15-20 years that he purchased from Todd Taggert at the old Allied Lutherie. Todd had sourced the wood from luthier Jeffrey Yong from Malaysia. 95% of John’s clients want a Brazilian Rosewood, Honduran Mahogany, Koa or Sycamore Maple guitar. Like all luthiers, he has the “wood disease” and has purchased a variety of woods across the years. I asked him what sets that he had for years and always wanted to use. My old architecture and industrial design background coming out… ![]()

Here is the rosette that he installed. A very traditional Nazareth Style 42 design with a ring Green Abalone but instead of Ivoroid he used some highly flamed maple that he has had in the shop for some time. He will use the same flamed maple for matching the top purflings.
![]() ![]() Here is a shot the beautiful landscaped Malaysian Blackwood sides, rough thicknessed with his tapered rim pattern drawn on it. John’s 00 pattern is slightly deeper than CF Martin, falling between the depth of a 0 and 00 (4-3/16”). ![]()

I'm with Steve. I'm a rosette snob and this is one of my favorites I've seen.

Thanks…
![]() I will pass along your compliment to John… ![]() Quote:
Once the matching top purflings are installed, it will look great. John’s core aesthetic is of course derivative of the Nazareth mothership. Things like substituting alternative soundboard (German Spruce), tonewoods (Malaysian BW) and decorative accents (Ebony binding with flamed Maple purflings) but staying within the traditional aesthetic framework was the design goal.

I saw John’s guitars up close for the first time at the Artisan Guitar Show, and they were spectacular. Once I come up for air from some recent acquisitions, Circa is one of the next guitars on my list. That guitar is going to be stunning!

Bob, this is looking great. I love John's guitars second to John himself. What a great guy.
The subtle changes in rosette and purfling with the nod to tradition is a nice touch. Thanks for posting the progress on this one. |

John was able to successfully bend the two Malaysian Blackwood rims. He thinned the sides to 0.082” (2.1 mm) and the Venetian Cutaway area to 0.073” (1.9 mm). He also sprayed the cutaway area with veneer softener and let it soak for an hour before bending it.
![]() The non-cutaway side bent perfectly with John’s Fox Bender. It requires no clamping at all and fits tightly to his body mold. ![]() ![]() Here are the two Malaysian Blackwood glued up with with Khaya neck and end blocks ![]() ![]()
